This is the second time around for .mobi, the proposal originally forwarded by Nokia (Quote) in 2000. Then, ICANN rejected the application because it was light on technical details and didn't cover all the topics required in the proposals For the second proposal, Vodafone (Quote) and Microsoft were added as authors of the proposal. If the .mobi sTLD (define) is accepted, the companies plan to launch a 12 -company joint venture called Mobi JV to
manage the registry, made up of vendors and trade associations with an interest in the mobile industry.

Mobile TV Revenues to "skyrocket" says Informa The mobile entertainment market will more than double over the next five years, reaching $38.1 billion (£19.3 billion) in 2011, according to Informa Telecoms & Media. In its new report, ‘Mobile Entertainment’, Informa says the market was responsible for
$18.8 billion in revenues worldwide in 2006. Music and images dominate the market accounting for 64% of revenues in 2006. But while mobile music will continue to grow, the market for wallpapers, avatars and other images will shrink, Informa believes. By 2011, images will have fallen to fourth place, behind mobile games and video.

Earlier this year, Microsoft officials made their case for .mobi. In an e-mail
statement, Mike Wehrs, Microsoft director of technology and standards, said the company is "committed to delivering wireless data services to consumers and enterprises with our partners and to developing the robust opportunity they represent to the telecommunications, mobile and Internet industries."
Bill Plummer, Nokia vice president of external affairs, said a domain extension
for mobile device is necessary and not intended to bifurcate the Internet into
mobile and non-mobile arenas.
