Over the weekend I had made an offer on Sedo for a name listed as "make an offer" The listing price was $500, I matched that amount. Then I get a response $10,000 to buy the name ? To me this is just a stupid waste of time, I have no problem that you may want $10,000 for a name. Although there is not much point listing a name for $500 offers if you have no intention of selling around that amount. I find that nearly every time I see a name I like with a "make an offer" amount it is just a waste of time. I normally keep looking. I am well aware this is a tactic to have more offers next to the listing, but makes me think ....
Are you a dumb seller?

Consider this: If the seller used a BIN listing of $10,000, and the absolute best a potential buyer can do is $9,000, the seller loses out on a sale over $1k.
Sorry, this is really perverted logic.

How on Earth this might be a loss? This is called "less profit".

For BIN $10k, how much the seller could buy the domain for? $10? $100? $5k? I bet no more. Even if $5k, then if he sells it for $9k, okay then Sedo fees etc., take $7 Net. Then it's $2k profit. Not loss.

To get a loss, he should sell it with Net cheaper than his primary cost.

I have the sellers problem. When I bulk uploaded my many domains to Afternic, All Make Offer, I put a minimum bid of $999. Now this was too expensive for some domains and too cheap for others. And it's going to be a real PITA, when I get around to adjusting each domain individually.

The easiest way to do this is to set a %, and create a formula in your Minimum Offer column to create the minimum offer utilizing a % of your Buy it Now price. That way, you don't have to adjust them individually. You can just paste the formula all the way down the column, and boom - all your make offers are within a % of your BIN price ;)

At SEDO this tactic makes sense as all offers received remain recorded and displayed on the domain page.
Many sellers use it to attract offers (lowball ones) so their domains will display the number of received offers (not the amount). Hope this helps.

It could be due to inflation. :xf.grin: lol

Yeah, a jump that big. Seems like the seller is just wasting everyone's time waiting for the magical unicorn to come along and say yes to $10K.

I didn't know you could do that. I'll look into it. But my problem is I have not set any BIN's. This is what is going to take a whole lot of time. Thinking about the BIN for each and every domain, up front. Rather than, as now, only needing to think about the BIN after I get an offer, on the1-5% of domains which get offers. I do know I have to go through this exercise. It's just finding the time, along with dealing with Freelancers, on Freelancer.com. Which seems to take up an inordinate amount of time also :(

Afternic also has a BIN which allows make offer and you can set minimum offer as well

You know it's strange how the mind works sometimes. I've always assumed that was an either/or situation. Thanks for the opening of my eyes/mind :)

On domainnamesales i have domains set at 2k minimum offer knowing i want much more.. Most often buyers wont come up from 2k to 10k.

The reason for this is very mean and I tracked it, the scenario is as follows :
He puts the name as you mentioned here, then het gets 10+ offers in a couple of months, then increases the minimum offer to 10K! Then someone naive would think he got 10 offers above 10K already so this boosts their confidence to place a 10K offer, then the seller sells the name... absolutely mean but it works... unfortunately!

If a name is only worth $500 - $2000 i think list it as Buy Now ...... most buyers will pull the trigger, sure higher value/quality names need a starting point, decide if the name really is beyond the Buy Now option No unicorns ........ just fast cash

that's why you have a buy price only

make offer attracts the cheapo lowballers!!

Negotation is patience is negotation is all.
You can negotiate outside SEDO via email with the seller if you don't want to boost up his public seen amounts of offers.

I think you overread something. The post you replied on states:
"you lose a sale over 1k", meaning: by putting a min bid and bin of 10k, someone who is willing to pay 9k won't send you an offer. You lost a potential sale there and the reason is you wanted 1k more, even though you might have accepted the 9k.

We did the same with 2k minimum offers at domainnamesales. But because of their need to blanket the offer page with a mandatory sign up form for buyers EVERYthing got through, even without a price. I know it's been discussed before here, but we just gave up on them…

Great points/reasons everyone. Agree and see a point in many.

Damn me. You're totally right. My bad. @hxp my apologies.

This reminds me, the other day someone on ebay had a domain for BIN $87 or best offer, so I offered $8 just to get the negotiation going and maybe get it for $30 or $40.

He snap rejected the offer and doubled the BIN price. lol
After a week of it still being there I really wanted to offer $8 again or even less just to tilt the crap out of him but I let him off.

…just to get the negotiation going…
…currently (slowly, cautiously) negotiating for a .org with a seller who has the name up at numerous venues… but at vastly different prices.

He's come down from the highest listing, but still not to the level of the lowest…

He probably was being kicked out of his parents basement when he asked for 10k or stoned.

I find it's incredibly hard to buy a domain no matter where you find it or what method is used.

It must have been an absolutely awful name anyways for $500 on Sedo. I don't think I've seen anything remotely good under $2k, as an end-user. Even then it's some shlt like zfclass.com or something.

Actually SEDO's Listing price for Make Offer is slightly confusing for New sellers as well as New Buyers. Generally in Domain Market Domain with Make Offer Price means Buyer has to Offer equal to or greater than the price mentioned. But at SEDO the meaning different than general trend, Its is neither Buy Now nor Regular Make Offer. I do not know why they do not change it to Make Offer with Buy Now, Which will make things easy for buyers as well as sellers. One thing you can do is buyer has to find if there is minimum price set by seller if yes then there is a high possibility that Seller will sell it. If not then seller has misunderstood the Make Offer
