Dropcatch was faster than GoDaddy, but isn't listing my domain yet. What to do?

Hi guys,

I left my domain expire and it was first taken over by HiChina, but I could never find out a way of getting it back from them. I backordered on GoDaddy, but Dropcatch was faster and got it instead. They're not listing my domain on their website yet.

Now: should I already place a backorder with Dropcatch or should I wait for the auction to show up?

Thanks!

... and the plot gets thicker: it's being sold by NameBright as a "premium domain" for the modest sum of $2395. Which is infinitely more than I'm willing to pay or is worth in the first place. Is there anything else I can do or will my domain keep getting snatched over and over again as it expires?

Thanks

I think the only definite way is to buy the domain name, but you are not willing to pay the 2K.

You can backorder it with several drop catching services to increase your chances of getting it when it drops. However, if someone buys it and never lets it drop, I think there is nothing you can do to get it back. Lets wait for other members to chime in, maybe there is a way that I don't know about. Good luck

You have three choices, either buy the domain from them, make them an offer or place backorders at other catchers like NameJet and wait patiently for the domain to drop again.

I wouldn't place a backorder on Dropcatch, that would probably result in them keeping the domain for a few years hoping you'll cave and buy the domain from them.

I have no stats, but it's been my feeling that HugeDomains are so confident in the decisions about the the domains they buy, that they tend to hold them for about 3-5 years before they make any decisions about dropping them.

Don't. Whatever you do, make them an offer. They will counter with a price higher than their current asking price. Even visiting the domain by you or your previous users are counted as possible signs that somebody is visiting the website with a possible interest in buying the domain.

Your best bet is to buy the domain at their asking price, or to move to another domain. Sorry for being the bringer of bad news.

How long has it been since dropcatch won the domain and it hasn't been been listed on hugedomains yet? If it's a long time, it's possible that the domain was won by somebody other than hugedomains. Your chances are probably better for buying it back at a negotiated price if it was caught by a third party.

This is exactly the pickle you will find yourself in if you let active domains drop.

NameBright, Dropcatch and HugeDomains are all owned by the same person. Unfortunately, you're probably end up having to pay the asking price or look for another domain. I personally would look for another domain.

Never backorder through Godaddy. You can handreg faster than that. I wonder why a company like Godaddy is not upgrading its backorder service.

I feel sorry for your loss but you can always take more care in future.

I guess they earn enough from their expired domain auctions and don't want to pay for the thousand or so registrars they would need to even have a chance to compete with DropCatch or the NameJet/Snapnames duo.

There have been many articles/posts on the costs that the main players pay to run those registrars, but here is the first I found: http://domainincite.com/21309-dropcatch-spends-millions-to-buy-five-hundred-more-registrars

Thanks for the share.

From what I understand, by adding registrars with them, they are basically creating more hands to catch domains by being able to send more requests through different registrars the split second it is released by verisign (in case of .com and .net) ?

Correct. Of course more connections for them means less connections for everybody else too. Since there are only a limited number of connections.
