Dotster Eamil said .SC extension to raise in price: The Death of .sc

Ok, I just got a email from dotster that the price of registering a .sc is going to rise at the end of 2008.

Currently dotster charges $34.99 per year
The official site nic.sc shows $95 per year.

The email never let me know what the price was going up to at dotster....might anyone know the new price?

Also, I see this as the complete death of .sc....

I know, I know, it was not that good to begin with but there are a lot of good keywords available that could be developed for a (hopefully) profitable website.

I personally own two .sc keywords but I really doubt I will continue to renew the domains if the price is going to push $50-$75. (oops, guess that shows how much I am making on my sites.)

For people that took the plunge into .sc will you continue to hold on to your .sc even with a price increase or will you just mark it off as a "good try"?

got same message, i'm going to renew it one year more, before they increase price.
And if i dont get better offer or some ROI during next year i'm going to drop it.

Looks like I gambled on the wrong extension. =P

Any idea what the reasoning behind this may be, other than short term gain for the registry? You'd think they'd want to encourage take up of the extension.

Prices aren't going up at the end of 2008, they have gone up already.
The email I got said "the cost to register a .SC domain will be increasing substantially at the end of January 2008. "

Unfortunately I didn't read the blurb at the bottom, where it said:
"guaranteed through Wednesday, January 30, 2008."

I was going to renew some today but find they have jumped to $115 at Dotster.

Nic.sc prices them at $95, yet Dotster charge $115. Was Dotster's cut as big before I wonder or are they getting greedier?

The .sc whole sale price is now actually $75-$50(6 yrs+), so their profit is approximately $40/year/domain

I guess they assume that you must be able to pay $115 if you are willing to pay $80 for a .sc, so why not charge you more. :hehe:

That profit is more than they used to cost in total.

Possibly, but they were $35, and it's a huge leap to $115, not "substantial" as the email put it.

In fact, the new $75 whole sale price won't take effect until Feb. 1. So the profit margin is really huge today(Jan 31-$90?).

The end of January 2008, is a bit misleading then (intentionally for more profit?).

I would consider the end of January to be the 31st and not the 30th.

$115...wow that is amazing.......i was hoping the $95 was an old price from nic.sc and they just didn't update...

but i see it is all correct......i got mine when the price was still the same

for sure now i see this as killing the .sc extension

that is a huge jump, well you can probably get 15% off that tld with the coupon bargaincat.com as well...

edit: I just tested it now, $115 for 1 year at Dotster and the coupon does work - down to $97.75 but still a lot more than it was.

Not a notice as to what the price was going to be...just that it was going up....i could of understood a maximum $20 jump......but a $60 jump (at dotster) is wild

Located in the Western Indian Ocean, NE of Madagascar.

.sc only is available to foreigners.
Second level extensions are only for the locals.

Packages containing animal feces directed to registry should be well wrapped.

iDotz.net are showing $99.95pa, but I've just renewed my only .sc at $39.95 (looks like a glitch).
Will probably sell or drop it this year.
