I can see a number of these getting picked up - there a few others I'm surprised they accepted the high reserve and can't see selling because of it. What do you think?

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
It looks like it was registered well past 2016 (2003-4?) and also doesn't seem like it was on the TBR, so likely one investor sold it to another in 2016.

And as for the buyer, I'm betting on the Weed Dealers flush with cash.

Archive.org shows it was indeed first registered circa 2003-2004 but Whois shows 2016. Wouldn’t that mean it would have had to been dropped at some point? Why would Whois show 2016 if it hadn’t been dropped?

It might have been sold during the redemption period, which possibly could have triggered a new reg date. Or dropped and then recovered by the Registrar, as I don' see it on any TBR lists.

On the plus side, it is only Feb 8 and the dollar volume of NameBio-listed .ca sales is already about 50% of all of 2019. Maybe 2020 is the year for .ca?!
Bob

PS the average price is currently $17,600 too currently :xf.grin: Small number statistics can be your deceptive friend!

In case people have not noticed the most recent NameBio release has a .ca in first place. Jane sold for $25,000 at Sedo. It is registered at GoDaddy Canada. Does anyone know of the seller or end user. Re user, there are several possibilities including this cannabis related company: Jane Technologies that recently raised $21 million. There are also several two word names ending in Jane in corporate use in Canada plus of course the Jane/app people as possibilities. As of now the name does not go anywhere except GoDaddy. Nice PayDay for someone. It seems to only have a creation date in 2016 but presume it must have expired and got picked up again.
Bob

NIce Sale. Thanks for pointing that out. As a 4-letter first name that is pretty popular, I think that was a reasonable but good price.

It was definitely in TBR, I have it in my records, Dec 28, 2016. In my notes I have it as being one I was trying to go after too. I also have the TBR results, tt was picked up by MyID. Unfortunately it wasn't me that got it! Possibly went into the myid black hole.

In my opinion it was definitely an experienced seller. I'm sure they had to stand their ground on the price and rejected many smaller offers. Its a good example for CA domainers. Know what you've got, know your buyer, and be willing to walk away from a potential sale. I know its easier said than done, especially when you're looking at your renewal costs.

As for the buyer, I'm guessing that will become self evident fairly soon!

No, definitely was in TBR. The only way it resets the registration date is if it is completely expired. 99.999% of the time, that means going through TBR. Occasionally a .CA had been historically dropped outside of TBR as the result of a CIRA action, like cancelling a domain due to a failed Registrant Information Validation (RIV).

Good work - something must have happened with my text-search through my old HTML files, as I have them going back a long way.

I just loaded Dec 28 manually, and you're right:

2826. jane.ca +

And it went #1 to MyID:

1. 14:00:00.003908 jane.ca MyID.ca INC.

In terms of other potential suitors, I noticed that a lot of real estate agents use a variant of jane.ca for their webites, and as you know, $25K is nothing to a good agent, and it's all a write-off anyway.

cjane.ca
soldbyjane.ca
homeswithjane.ca
rcjane.ca

I'm still going with the cash-pumped Devil Weed guys but real estate is a popular area of domain sales.

The majority of realtors are very cheap. But yes, some understand its all about branding/advertising themselves. I wish more understood that better!

It's baaaaack....

TIMS.CA

And LLL fans are going to have a field-day this week, as I count at least 4 premiums and a few more mid-level options. MyID's servers' be melting down in 3 days.

If I recall, TIMS went for around 4 figures before when it dropped last. It’s a high risk domain in my opinion.

Big-time, but also high-reward if you get lucky - not worth it to me personally, but as past TBRs attest, others certainly feel differently.

Or maybe The Imminent Mitigating Suit.

Wow, the more I go through this pre-list the crazier things get and there might be double-digit numbers on what I consider "premium". High-end LLLs and singular 1-words, many of which have been off the market since the early-2000's or back before 2000.

All we need now is a 2-letter/number/character domain to pop up and we're all set.

The TBR is always good in February. Don't ask me why.

CIRA is promoting "lowest price .ca domains" on it's Facebook feed. Discounts if you register through CIRA.ca
WHC leading the pack with $0.88 for the first name, for new customers.
Godaddy is #2 with $0.99.

Happy Handregging!

There's two unfortunate reasons why the last two February TBRs have exploded.

Sorry to be the uninformed one here, but what are those unfortunate reasons?

As I covered a year or to a year-and-a-half ago, a couple of long-time .CA domainers unfortunately passed away and also as I noted earlier, the remainder of their domains were due to expire in early-2020.

Just looked now and looks like you got your wish. I won't steal your thunder by posting here. I'll let you break the news ;)

You wouldn’t think that the CBC would let domains expire.

R3.CA. This be one crazy week.

I'm getting pretty good at this and predicted all the major Oscars last night both personally and in a few contests - I should have laid down some real $$$ bets.

Called the director and repeated (to much derision) that the voters are all thinking "why can't a foreign language film win Best Picture - let's send a message!" and I got laughed out of the house in favor of the odds-on choice, 1917... until the winner was announced. :xf.grin:

You should register PredictionsGuru (available for hand-reg in .ca) @DomainRecap and go into the monetized prediction business.:xf.grin:

Several Canadian companies have R3 as part of name. Will be interesting to see how much it goes for. There is a big blockchain company on the .com I see.

This is getting really crazy and I'm not even sure how to create a Top Picks list, as it would literally be a page long. Maybe a Top Picks with text and then an Honorable Mentions list just with the domain names...

You know what worries me about weeks like this is, that because there is so much selection and you really don't know how the bidding is going to go, so you go for a lot of them.

Then the TBR run hits and you get emails stating you just won 15-20 domains (many of which might not be your top choices). and you're out a big chunk of change, This happened to me last year, and it was partly due to a buyer (who outbid me) stiffing them and I got the bill.
