Moving names between Dotster accounts IS possible without any security question answer baloney. you don't have to extort your buyer/seller for their security info!

You just need to force the issue and be adamant that you want to move the domain, and have them remove the domain from your account so that the other account holder can click on "Add Domains."

Some of the reps will really try to get you to be an extortionist, but that's okay! Just keep up your good values and morals and good outcomes will come!

Here's an example of my recent scary CS scenario that turned out well:

Varun P

9:37:55 AM

Justin

I don't know their secret answer, but please add domain to their account and remove from mine thanks

9:39:07 AM

Varun P

Justin, without authenticating the account owner, I do not have the permissions to make any changes to our customers account.

9:39:16 AM

Varun P

Do you have the login details of the another account?

It's ok if you can't move it. They will log in and click on "Add Domains"

9:40:59 AM

Varun P

Since the domain is already associated with another account, they will not be able to add the same domain name in another account.

9:41:43 AM

Justin

wait

9:41:47 AM

Justin

what do you mean?

9:42:40 AM

Varun P

Disco...com domain is already associated with another account.

Justin

Yes it's in my account.

9:42:54 AM

Justin

I want to move it to their account.

9:44:55 AM

Varun P

9:45:29 AM

Justin

I don't know the answer to his security question

9:46:31 AM

Justin

can you remove dsciooo..com from my account and have it pending add to their account. They can then manually log in and click on "Add Domain"

9:47:10 AM

Varun P

Oh Okay. You can contact the another account owner and get back to us with the security answer or you can give you security question to another account owner and inform them to get back to us to move the domain name.

9:47:56 AM

Justin

Wait wait wait

9:48:11 AM

Justin

When I did this before with customer support, they were able to remove the domain from my account, and have it pending added to their account

9:48:25 AM

Justin

Then the other account holder just had to log in and click on "Add Domains" and it worked...

9:48:57 AM

Varun P

Yes. I can remove the domain from your end.

9:49:04 AM

Justin

you are paranoid.
nobody stealing anything
setup temp securaity question. call them to push. no one will ever push more than they should.
if u still insecure abuot that.. wait 60 days and transfer out
.

Well. I come back to this :P. What started out as advice for people who are in a very bad predicament with Dotster, turned into some kind of argument over who knows what. How does that happen?

Dude, like... why do you think we deserve to get screwed over lol? Matt was on chat today saying that he tried to transfer his domains out of Dotster but customer support wouldn't let him.

I guess if you still want to blame us... that's fine. You're allowed to blame me, because I'm new to domaining, and maybe registering with Dotster was a noob mistake? But as you can see some seasoned members invested money there too.

Of course, I do see that other people didn't register with Dotster because maybe yeah they might've foreseen this or at least considered it.

Anyway, yeah. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm not saying you're right. We all have different views.

But you're definitely not saving anyone money.

This is clearly not a registrar for domainers. Do yourself a favor, and find a registrar that is smooth and that you can trust. These savings are not worth the time and aggravation. And I hope you are not expecting red carpet treatment from a registrar that is most likely selling you domains at a loss.

oh... so you agree with alcy? I guess we really shouldn't been wiser lol. Ahhh. Thanks Kate.

But for myself, I think I need to take my chances with Dotster. I want to get into the BB niche, but paying $10 or $8, when you can pay $1.32 to learn which names get accepted/rejected is worth it for the long term. It goes for the other niches too.

I think for beginning domainers, Dotster is great because of the trial / error. I would rather spend $100 for 100 domains, than $1000.

I'm playing the devil's advocate, but you don't seem to be very confident in your registrations. Also, if you rely on BB rejections to tell you which names are worthy and which ones are not, it's no different than using estibot. You still don't know what makes a domain valuable. Sorry for the off topic.
I think your post is useful because it drew the attention on the bad policies of some registrars. You look at the dollar savings but I'm not sure you value your time like you should :)

@Kate , which registrar would you recommend?

Personally I prefer Dynadot for gTLDs. But I use many registrars because of acquisitions and drops.
I also use different registrars for ccTLDs.
Just to be clear, I don't use the cheapest registrars. I want registrars that are safe, trustworthy, convenient to use and don't serve BS.
And if you want a more personal management interface - then use the API.

When transfering a domain from dotster to a different registrar like UR, the process is completely different and hassle free. You don't even need to contact dotster. However this only applies after 60 days.
