discuss Domains & Accurate Appraisals...

We all acquire and invest in domain names, and we nearly always think about the value of a name and what it could be worth to a potential buyer. The majority of us also list our names on many of the sales platforms hoping to bag the next sale.

So with this in mind, how do you price up your domains realistically? How much of pricing up your names is actually guess work? Are there, or do you know of any reliable appraisal providers out there, or do you think there is a severe lack of providers who can accurately price and up and value names?

Sedo, Afternic and GoDaddy offer an appraisal service at cost, but how accurate is it?
Or.. is there room in the domain appraisal market?

As for as i know , auto appraisals are based on previous sales and not always accurate.Following trends will help.Nobody thought bitcoincash.org will go for around 50K.

Similarly , we cannot assure similar names will go even for 0.5K next year. Its entirely based on market demand.

Some experienced domain brokers may help in evaluating good keyword domains.

Yes.There is room in domain appraisal market.
If you can combine trends + previous sales + end user market demand , you will be unique.

Well in answer to the first half of your question, I think the answer lays in investing in Subjects and areas you know fairly well. Nobody is going to be an expert across the whole board and I include appraisal services. These services only rely on certain metrics which you can quite easily apply yourself. Nothing beats specific industry knowledge in registering/buying and selling

I personally reframe from offering appraisal opinions unless it's a subject area I know

Paying someone to appraise your domain names is a waste of money. If its important enough to you, you can do your own research. Start with recent sales (like Namebio), then look at Estibot or even GoDaddy's new evaluation page (if you are in the US) - these are usually high (except for more premium domains), but they also give you lists of some recent sales of similar domain names. Then look at industry trends and keywords to find what has value. And you can always post your domains here on nP in the appraisal section and see what others think. Good luck!

Yes...tons of room for a reasonably priced evaluation service. If I had more time I would start one myself.

Without being specific, the 'cost' to evaluate a name charged by one of them is a joke...or at least it was the last time I looked. I am constantly amazed at how low some domains are sold for...with a 1 to 2 percent sell through rate it is basic math to determine what should be charged for a .com domain...even a bad one!

Appraisals are useless, if there is no buyer.
When a buyer shows up, you'll negotiate the price... or you won't if you have a firm price in mind.
There is no such thing as 'accurate' appraisal.

Here is my appraisal: your domain name is worth $10K to the right buyer, if the stars align right. But the likelihood of a sale is 1/1000000 (more or less the odds of winning the lottery). Very useful appraisal right ?

100% agreed.

The price of a domain can be found between what someone is willing to pay and where the owner is willing to sell.

I just tried a number of appraisal sites and got a range from $10 upto $16k for OPYUS/COM.... I would suggest they are only useful for showing similar recent sales.

Appraisals in this industry are simply a joke. You can do a far better job of valuing you domains than anyone else. However, you may get appraisals from say 5 appraisers as follows;

#1 Appraiser: 267.00
#2 Appraiser: -0-
#3 Appraiser: 7,000.00
#4 Appraiser: 1395.00
#5 Appraiser -0-

The total of these appraisals is $8,662 and if you were to divide it by 5, the average would be $1,732.

This is an example of what one of my recent domains appraised for, however I would ask about $2,800 knowing I would take $1,732 if I could get it.

Finally, I believe there is room in the domain appraisal market if someone were able to program just a little common sense. For example, the wealth of the industry the domain is/was intended for. Ex. Sex, Yachts, Diamonds, Real Estate, Financial vs. Lawns, Repairs, Labor or Contractors.

Good Luck to you, but your educated intelligent guess is better than any appraisal you can get.
