Here is a post that was shared by Raymond on The Domains :

"I received an email today from a reader that was about domain investing.

Hi, Raymond

Big fan of your blog, but one thing has always stuck in my craw…buying domain names is not investing, rather it is gambling. Why do people like Schwartz and Silver and several others call it investing?

This is something that has been brought up from time to time over the years. I thought it would be interesting to see where everyone stands on the topic of domains as an investment.

To take the straight definition of investing we have:

expend money with the expectation of achieving a profit or material result by putting it into financial schemes, shares, or property, or by using it to develop a commercial venture.
“getting workers to invest in private pension funds”
synonyms: put money into, provide capital for, fund, back, finance, subsidize, bankroll, underwrite; More
I have always thought of domain names as a hybrid of investing and gambling."

What do you think?

its only gambling if u do not know what you are doing

imo people who do it long enough and gain enough experience through hard work and research (as is case with many things in life).. then it becomes something more than gambling.. and only then.

cheers

It can be either. It depends on many factors.

For many new investors it is gambling because they don't have the experience to really know what they are doing.

As you gain more experience though, making smart decisions on a consistent basis takes out much of the gambling aspect.

I think it is a bit of both. Short popular .com good investment and then you gamble on others.

Like my emoji experiment. Playing around making a few sub emoji domains. lol
Example
adding another emoji like ❤ to my existing emoji domain. They do not all display right here.
A tip for others wanting to dabble. The chrome extension will show emoji characters but they do not all translate the same to puny code as they do in an IE browser which the .ws extension recognizes.

Though 'Gambling' is often used in reference to ill-informed investments, solely based on random instincts, the reality being every investment is a gamble. The question is what're the odds one is gambling against and how sustainable are the reasons, you base your decision on.

Domaining is a gamble too, where premium domain owners, certain of value appreciation, gamble on the prospect of getting the best price for their assets by holding on to it for years.
Those with premium brandables and made-up pronounceables, stick to their speculative floor prices, based on similar sales and in hopes that the right end-user will arrive, with the boom of startup ventures.

It all comes down to a collaboration of capital to invest,a keen understanding of branding, knowledge of trends, timing and an eye for treasures, where no one else may look.

"Domaining is a gamble, which when turns profitable could be considered an investment."

Exactly. Or, you know you are losing money, but do it anyway (as in real-life gambling addiction).

The one's who think it's gambling are already going to loose. For me it's an investment and with experience i am minimizing risk and maximizing profit.

All life is a gamble.

Putting money into private pension funds is not investing, it's shoving it down the toilet.
Buying shares is a massive gamble - will you be able to get out when the government and central bank policies change.
Buying Bitcoin is a good speculative investment, but it's volatile and high risk.
Buying property - you're probably too late, unless you want to live in it.
Keeping money in the bank - you must be mad. :)

So where does that leave "investing" in virtual assets like domain names and other names like facebook. It is my belief that as conventional employment opportunities decrease as a result of automation, Amazon, Ebay and the like, many people will turn to self-employment via the Internet. Good, usable domain names will become more valuable if this happens, but this depends on the controls and changes that shape the Internet of the future.

Yes life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you get. Some get luckier than others. Right name, right time, right wallet. :xf.grin:

One of my made ULR I did tonight. I just have it temporary directed to another site. I have a few others with more to build. Put some color in the portfolio if nothing else.

puny code I made for the new URL
