Domain Private Registration vs. P.O. Box

I'm wondering what the advantages and disadvantages are of having a Post Office box as opposed to putting Private Registration on my domains...

There's a number of threads already on the forum discussing the topic of privacy, however here are a couple considerations off the top of my head.

1 possible factor is cost. Are you paying for privacy, and for how many names? Then find out the cost 1 year's PObox rental in comparison.

Are you running a business? It would look more professional to have a local address, rather than a registrar's generic privacy details in the whois.

With a PO Box, you can actually receive physical mail.

Another thing is if you have domains (perhaps adult related) that you don't want people to associate with your name or your company's name, then I think registrar privacy would be the way to go.

as mentioned, a P.O. Box can be cheaper than paying for whois privacy on a large number of domains. you should be able to come up with a "name" for the whois which is not your personal name.


I don't think it is commonly known, but the USPS has a way for P.O. Box customers to use a street address in addition to the P.O. Box address. there might be some forms to fill out first.

Yeah they added street addressing where you can use their address, signature on file where they will actually sign for certain types of packages and email or text alerts so when they put mail in your box you get an alert. Added those a few years ago and I use all 3 of them.

I went with a PO Box. It cost me a bit over $200 for the year, but I'm sure I would have spent about that on privacy protection.
