With the advent of multiple popular social networks, Power.com has emerged as a startup aggregator of services ranging from Facebook to YouTube to MySpace. Connecting directly with social APIs, the site makes it easy to keep track of multiple accounts. Only time will tell if the networks are cool with this external placement โ€“ props for development on the generic name, though:

I almost think they could do better going the direct route and providing lead gen for power/electricity - how would you rate the use of the name?

with the success of mego.com in a related function, it seems like a possible winner. only time will tell. considering the relevance of social networking these days, it is a good place to gain "power".

This is the type of service that could of done just as well on a brandable name (think facebook or google). In reality there is no generic term that would work well for a company name for this service.

Power.com as a generic really does not add anything to the service.

I agree with Keynes, the name itself, if typed in, is more relavent elsewhere.

Since when was 'facebook' brandable - the term has been used for YEARS among students long before the website 'made it their own'.
There is a reason why they started first on TheFacebook, com before acquiring facebook, com (reg'd in 1997)

Just like how 'yahoo' is a dictionary word (albeit obscure) long before the website 'made it their own'.

But neither was really a generic term that made someone of the type of service they are being used for. Before yahoo would you of ever thought search engine when you heard the word. Nope, it was turned into a brand.

I can promise though, that even if power.com is successful, which i hope they are i really like their concept, the word power will always first and foremost make people think of some sort of energy whether it be eletrical, oil, etc. Or for that matter strength of some sort.

At the end of the day power.com is a GREAT generic used for a different type of service than maybe it would be best used for. BUT, it is very memorable and will be easy for users to attach too. I am sure there were more hits yesterday from the techcrunch.com link to the site than type-ins in all of the past year, and I am sure it gets plenty of type-ins.

I couldn't agree more!

Power.com is an Energizer or Durecell type domain! Barack could use it for the United States new direction towards other means of Alternative Energy.

Racing giant Jegs.com could use Power.com to sell it's crate Motors. Ford, Chevy could use it to sell crate motors etc.

A solar power company could use Power.com to sell solar panels.

A Hybrid company could use Power.com to sell battery powered cars.

A wind company could use Power.com to sell wind turbines.

This site could of been built on a different generic domain or even a brandable imo.

Definitely agree with you. Great domain; could be used for (IMO) a more "profitable" and meaningful purpose.

Solid points - social traffic is so hard to monetize, while power/energy has a natural, expansive market, especially in renewables.
