.US domains.US domains
They estimate 297MM registered domains which at say, $8 per would be about $2.4B. I haven't really looked into the report which I also saw mentioned elsewhere, however I don't think it's all that relevant to what we can expect domaining. Good news for VeriSign and the ICANN cartel though.

From the report :
"whilst the overall market size of the global domain industry is expected to increase over the next three years, growth will be at a slower rate than previous years and a drop in average revenue per domain is forecast"

The business value of the domaining business (from the point-of-view of the domainer) is based on "shortage". If you expand the available domain names, it would be a welcome boost only to the registrars. But a disaster to domain owners, especially those who have not yet accumulated sufficient capital base to buy every lucrative domain name from the various country codes, and emerging platform.

Maybe in a way, it is a welcome news for "late" domainers who could no longer penetrate the increasingly expensive prime domain names in the current TLDs. After all, every "virgin" ground is a lucrative opportunity.

How do you determine the market value of the whole domain industry? What could this possibly mean? Do they just mean registrars and other established domaining companies (like GD) or also the market value of the untold thousands of domain portfolios held by domainers?

This is promising for new domain investors...

And although growth in global top-level domains (ie .com and .net) will slow, growth in country code top-level domains (ie .au and .uk) is expected to increase in developing countries such as Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC nations).

The research also predicts trends in the domain industry such as consolidation to gain market share; a growing emphasis on bundling services; growth in demand for 'domain parking'; growth of mobile internet and .mobi; and a new internet provider platform, IPv6, dramatically increasing the number of available domain names

I wish people STOP spreading the words how good domaining is.

Spread the word that domains sucks--so the pie will be bigger for us who have the foresight the look into the future.

You can sell the gold but you not going to tell them where the goldmines are ...are you?

sHEEEEEEEzzzzzzzzzzzz...keep your mouth shut.

Everybody needs a domain sooner THAN LATER.

It is always a good year for domainners.

I am in the domain industry the same time with rick and kevin.
I suspect this is not true.....but maybe I am mistaken . There really were less than about 50 serious mulitple domain buyers in 1995 and early 1996. I started buying when there were less than 15,000 domains registered on the planet.

What was the cost of a domain in 1996 then, and how long did it take for a registration to be processed? Also, how was a registration made ? I'd like to see if you know. :)

BTW.....Kevin Ham got into domains several years after Rick. I got started several months before Rick did.

That reminds me, does anyone remember the reseller company that Network Solutions bought or used to own in '98..I am trying to remember the name, through which registered my first domain...

I heard .net is much popular and easier to be registered in those good old days?

I registered a .com (via an China agent) for my personal site in 1997 and dropped it after 1 year. Then I became a domain newbie in late 2006
