Dynadot โ€” .com Registration $8.99

Does having a matching gTLD affect the .com value?

I'm curious to know what others think regrading the value of a .com once the matching gTLD is out. Will the value increase or decrease?

Say you own

777Casino.com and .casino comes out and someone regs 777.casino.

Will the .com go up because there is now another interested party who could be sending the .com free traffic?

or

Will the .com lose a bit of value because there is more selection and competing traffic?

I'd be more worried if the operator of 777.casino wisely trademarks their brand, your 777casino.com may have just gotten reduced to one customer and any TM infringing parking activity may set you up for a UDRP. If successful your value just went to -0. I've considered registering trademarks for any semi brandable domains for this reason. Keywords offer some inherent insulation.

If someone is efficient at the TM process how much does a TM typically cost?

I know of one .whatever that comes out next year i want for this reason.

Last time I did it it was about $300-400, go to uspto.gov to find out the latest, assuming the part of earth you reside in falls under US jurisdiction :D

No I'm Canadian, I'll read up on what out of country residences require to apply. Thanks for the average price.

I personally wouldn't consider the dot com instantly increasing in value because you bought a gTLD There are exceptions though, like if its an obvious premium gTLD. But the problem would then be the odds that you will spend the full amount or more of the 'gain'.

Don't you need an actual real business to register a TM?

If a domain is worth the added protections then its worth going through the motions to make it legit. Its not hard to start a business or be involved in commerce, being profitable is the hard part and a TM registration doesn't include your balance sheet.

It is rather nice to have, not must have. But nice to have it is indeed.
