I recently got a 98cent coupon for namecheap, so i transferred an expiring domain i own from godaddy to namecheap.

I was wondering if anyone does this often due to prices? For example Godaddy usually has $5-7 transfer discounts, as with other registrars. So i wonder if anyone does this every year to safe money on renewals?
So basically just transfer domains back and forth.

Or is this against some iCANN policy?

Seems like a good deal to save $6 on each domain renewal, but maybe not fair to the registrars. But $12+ renewal fees is alot.

I farm out ALL THE TIME. Never paid for renewals yet (even with renewal coupon).

I have asked this same question before, and some people here replied that it's just too hassle to move domains around, typing transfer codes, and confirming emails and stuff. So they say they just pay for renewal.

If you have hundreds of domains in your portfolio, your registrar might give you steep discount rates on your renewals though (by signing-up to their exclusive membership).

I don't switch registrars just to save on renewals.
IMO it's best to find a register you are comfortable with, and if possible develop a personal relationship. If you have valuable assets they deserve attention.
There is nothing wrong with gaming the system, but do not expect red carpet treatment from the registrar in case of a big issue. After all, you are not a customer that is profitable to them.

Besides, renewals are business expenses for tax purposes :)

With 1.99 and 4.95 transfers, economics rules for me.

Because i am not a very busy domainer, pushing domains left and right, regging domains every day, i seldom have any need to communicate with my Registrar the moment my domain lock gets activated.

In fairness though, Yahoo Domains staff tried to help me out fixing their elaborate domain transfer quirks over the phone... all for 1.99 transfers.

In the end, i guess it's just to each his own.

I sometimes do this back & forth between GoDaddy and Namecheap.

As an example, for those who use Godaddy privacy, transferring out come renewal time to a registrar with free privacy, can same you substantial bucks as GoDaddy charges for domainsbyproxy.

After another year, transfer back to GoDaddy a minimum of 5 domains and get the privacy free.
