Just curious if anyone is or has thought about leasing a domain to an end user. I can see some issues with it but if it where treated like leasing land I bet it could work if you could find a lessee.

Leasing doesn't seem too popular. I've owned dotcomleasing/com for a couple of years now, just waiting for someone to knock on my door. So far, nothing.

It may be that the market is still too young or that there needs to be a benefit to leasing a domain, like say you have a developed site to sell retail and traffic is already present. It seem like you could find someone to lease at that point. I don't really see a lot of value in lease at this point as you can still get a lot of domain name at a reasonable price if not reg price.

With reg fees being fairly low I don't know if leasing will ever be a popular thing. People probably just figure they will purchase a new domain rather than renting one and they will get the same results.

There have been some previous posts on the subject. The leases are often tied with an option to buy. It gives an end user purchaser a way to test the value of the domain.

To do it right takes a much broader skill set than just flipping domains. I suspect it is done most often by those with a background in commercial real estate. It would only be worth the hassle for higher value names so the people doing it are likely not to talk about it.

Leasing is becoming a very good option for those people looking to monitze their names without selling.

I like it because you know exactly what the domain is going to be earning each month. Much better than the smoke and mirror's reporting from some of the parking companies. Names that do well for leasing programs are; natural traffic, geo targeted, generic terms.

You can look around at leasthis.com to see how they do things
