Does anyone "borrow/rent" domains for advertisement?

Wondering if this is legit.

Let's say I pay someone $x for her/him to change a (parked) domain's nameservers to mine for a month. I run advertisements until the owner changes the nameservers back.

Does anybody do this? If not. . .do you think anybody would?

Thanks.

It's usually referred to as "Leasing" a domain, and yes it's been done legitimately many times before. A few big domain owners I've heard of don't sell their names at all and deal with leases only.

Check out www.leasethis.com and www.sendori.com for two companies attempting to wrangle this practice into a marketplace format. I've never used either, but both look pretty good.

Thanks for the links, RJ. Leasethis looks good, but I can't find any traffic stats, and the prices are quite high. For my purposes, traffic is the only important thing.

What forum would be appropriate for posting a want to lease thread?
WTB, I guess?

Rep Added for RJ.

If someone is making X amount of dollars per month from a domain from parking, then logically, you would have to offer them X+Y dollars to make it worth their time and money.

I think the key issue to consider is that you'd somehow have to monetize the traffic better than the owner has been doing, otherwise it's not worth your time and money.

A lot of factors come into play; the value of a domain may be higher at a specific point in time. For example, we own a valentines day domain, but it would lease / rent far higher in January / February than say, in August ;)

regging's post ^^: obviously. The idea is to find someone who is getting good views but bad clicks or just not too many of both and offer him/her a fair some of money beforehand or make a deal where revenue will be divided. There's no way running a site that produces revenue better than a landing page can be hard.

Especially with my plan. Actually my plan may suck I dunno.

*heads over to WTB board to find out.
