Does a long site down negatively affect it ?

I recently had an issue with one of my sites.
It has being hacked and the hoster suspended the account,
this happened 1-12-2006.
Yesterday a talk with them and they told me that I can run the site again if I change/update to a more secure cms 8Iwas using a 1 year old Mambo)
Now this site was up from three years or so and have some good response for it's kind (it is not a commercial site, it is for an absolutely original non for profit initiative)
Now it will keep some days more before we can set up it again because we are outside home/office for a business trip.
Do this long time down affect in anyway our position in search engines?

I ask because I am absolutely N00B with SEO

Yes, downtime can get you temporarily dropped from the Google listings. I had a site that was down for 4 days and Google took me out of the listings for about a month or so. Didn't really affect my Google PR in the long run, though the downtime was in between updates and the site was listed again before the next one.

its will only effect your site if the search engin spiders the site before you put iy back online. else it will spider what ever is on the page
