I am a newbie to this. I spent several hours yesterday trying to come up with a name for a new site to develop. I wanted a weight loss/diet site. Finally decided on a get buff fitness type site and the name HotModelBody.com
Ummm that took a long time to come up with...

It made me wonder, if most of you have a strong knack to make up names and also "just know" what to buy or is it more studying the marketplace. I am sure there is a combination there..but which seems to be the most dominant.

Its really both. As with anything, you get better with experience. I have a list of keywords that I usually stick with when adding to the base of a domain. For example,

name + wire
name + journal
name + blog
name + forum
name + village
name + line
name + city
name + edge
name + talk
name + daily
name + times
name + book

My list goes about 150 deep like that. On other names, you just have to look at them and see if they look good to you. However, the market also plays a part. If I think a name may be valuable but I'm not sure I look at other very similar names. If they're taken, then the name I have is looking better. I'll then do searches on the keywords to see if the results come up exactly as in the domain. That's another plus.

Experience has given me an eye for what might be good or what is good. Sometimes I'm not positive if a domain is as good as I think so I'll research it.

If you're looking for yourself then you should make sure you're happy with the domain. I would include keywords, but that's not always a must have.

I would say finding names comes natural because I have a good sense on the market.

Thanks! I am curious did you get your 150 endings somewhere or come up with the list yourself?

And if it's not a problem for you, seven, I think we'd all love to see that 150-endings list. :)

One way worth trying is using wordtracker to get a list of searched phrases and paste them into a bulk domain checker tool.

surprising how many great names can come up that way sometimes

I think almost all of them I've picked up along the way, but I did comprise the list myself. I've looked - I didn't see any extensive lists out there with a similar formula. In general, if you stick with keyword + suffix like I just did you have a good chance of having something.

DMI - I may be able to conjure up some of my list. If anybody else is interested, let me know. It will influence how much effort I put in refining the list.

Some of the domain registrars have tools that let you see a list that has the keyword you choose.

Mostly these days I look for expired domains that are on the topic I am interested in. That can take a while also, but you can find some good ones if you keep at it.

Here are some examples I found using what you were looking for. It took me about 15 minutes:

DIET-LINE.COM is available!
SATISFACTIONDIET.COM is available!
FUNFUNDIET.COM is available!
YOURDNADIET.COM is available!
DIETNAKED.COM is available!
DIET-COMPARISON.COM is available!
DATINGDIET.COM is available!
EXTREMFITNESS.COM is available!

I think dietline is great..but diet-line with the hypen. I am new to this but think a name without a hypen even if it is not as good would be better. Am I wrong?

Well, most people think a domain without a hyphen is better than one that has it. Most list this is true for selling domains. If you are getting a domain for a site it is also true, but the a lesser degree, in my opinion.

Domains with hyphens work a little better for search engine optimization and for people to understand what the words are. But when they click on a listing they generally don't care much about what the domain looks like if the title and descriptions are good.

Oh..of course. I wasn't thinking about the SEO aspects. Thanks!

Well, for a site that is a small consideration. It's more important for a parked domain, since you have less choices to optimize with content.

I like hotmodelbody.com...will have to see how best to develop it.

"Domain Incubation"???

Does this refer to a technical process or is it a branding?

I too would like to see your list.
