What do you mean by "Developing domain"?

I have heard people saying "Develope your domain and it will be worth something"

What does that exactly mean?

For example - Hypothetically, if I have a domain name HighTechCreditCardProcessingCompany.com, do you mean that I have to come up with a credit card processing company THEN sell the business with domain?

That sounds really extreme.. develope a business just so I can sell a domain name? If I am able to develope a business, then I would not bother to squat on domain names.
Or is there a different meaning by the phrase "Develope your domain"

Lets be honest, when people say "Develope your domain and it will be worth something" all they are saying is that the domain is worthless.

:imho: domains have 2 kinds of value: intrinsic and potential. Intrinsic value comes from the likelihood that a domain would be typed-in (eg, cellphones.com) or is concise and relevant enough for a user to easliy recall (eg., aol.com ). This is a domains true value. Potential value is really a way of gauging how "brandable" a name is (eg, yahoo or google are short, brandable terms - if you have the $$ and resources to actually brand it). Very rarely do I see domains with no intrinsic value and loads of potential value (though the appraisal section would disagree with me). People tend to be so desperate to get a "good" domain related to a certain keyword (credit cards, insurance, stocks, whatever) that they start stream-of-consciousness registrations because all the truly good/valuable names are taken. Then they wind up with tons of "brandable" names that truly have no value at all and plans to develop 1,000 horrible domains to make themselves feel better about the wasted money.

So how do you make any $ if you have a domain with no intrinsic or potential value? You develop it and throw up Adsense or affiliate ads, or actually sell something yourself. You'd probably still get more traffic to your name if it were a type in or "branded". IMO however, you're better off doing far more research to get a handful of truly great domains, or pony up the cash to buy one from someone else. Then park it or decide if developing would generate more revenue.

The people who are saying DEVELOP aren't talking about creating an entire business. They are talking about putting up some useful content related to your domain and making a mini-site (or large-scale one, depending on your web design skills).

To use your credit card processing as an example, you could create a site with information about how credit card processing works, or maybe the history or technology behind it. Then you would either use credit card processing affiliates, or a service like AdSense or YPN which serves up ads based on your page content to monetize your site. Monetizing a domain/site in this manner has nothing to do with creating a fully functional business. It's all about getting people to the website to browse your content, and hopefully they'll click on one of your ads or use one of your affiliate links, thus making you some money.

Hope that helps :)

So if by your definition "intrinsic value" = "true value" then surely talking about any other kind of "value" is just mumbo jumbo?

If a domain is a good typo, brandable and has good potential it will sell instantly. On the other hand if a domain has nothing of that sort then selling that name at a good price is almost impossible. In this case this suggestion "Develope your domain and it will be worth something" is applicable. Develop a mini site or get some good content on it which will be relevant to the name. This will add more value to the name.

Developing means. Building a site for that particular domain name, Hosting it, Doing SEO and Marketing. Etc Etc. Getting traffic. Getting revenue out of it. :D
