discuss Do startups prefer the .io to .com??

I saw a .com recently available for purchase and the .io is taken and in use. though the .com just got available for purchase. So is it possible that a startup will prefer to use the .io over the .com ..

sounds funny right? as any one would say .com is king but i have read stuffs about startup tech companies going for the .io because it relates to their industry better as they interpret it to mean input/output (some hack term or so)..
and this company is a tech company that is into programming and all d coding...

So what do you think???

I saw a fair amount of startups using .tech. at CES this year. And even CES is now using ces.tech as the main URL (replacing CESshow.com ? )

Easy to switch to a gtld when your core business isn't selling anything.

CES probably not for general public and they are trying to hide their company's direct access from general public.

Those startup companies just like new domainers who like to register cheap ngtld. Even a pro domainer cannot remember 10 sites with 10 different tld. And end up visiting wheel.car instead of wheel.bike

Because they don't have to worry about losing any sales. If Amazon ran on Amazon.net then they would be losing sales to the .com. CES doesn't sell anything so if someone doesn't find them they aren't losing any money over it. Eventually they will be found on the second or third try. If you sell a product or a service then you have to be on the .com but if you don't sell a product or service then I think you can be on any extension.

Have you considered "catch all" email's as a reason to own a short .com versus owning the short new gTLD?

If an entity gets a better domain name, they can just forward from the old one to the new one.

General people are discussing about amazontube registered. But surprisingly no one mentioned which tld.

But all people know which tld it is.

People are waiting for amazontube as youtube alternative to monetize their videos. Most probably lot of small youtube creator join other platform because youtube's new 4000hours rule. I have some tube videos domains like sgvid, bgvid and tube category etc. and waiting for sale.

As everyone else said .io is being used when the .com is taken although that is starting to become expensive so start ups will have to move to another TLD soon enough.
