If you want a dozen domains listed in Google for the content of a single site that they redirect to, that won't happen. Google will detect the redirect. And you can't host the same site separately on a bunch of domains because of the duplicate content penalty.
If the domains bring type-in traffic or have backlinks, you can safely redirect them to the primary domain using a 301 (permanent) redirect. They won't be indexed but you'll benefit from the traffic.
I am no SEO master and not much of a developer but I do pay attention to things that I see work...
If you do a search on Yahoo.com for the keyword tires you will notice that Tires.com ranks # 6 (for me) in the natural search results. If you were to click on the result, it forwards to DiscountTire.com.
I am guessing this is a server side Frame URL Redirection, which allows you to use Meta Tags. The meta allows for a serp and appears that at least Yahoo doesn't mind this method.
Tires is a pretty strong keyword, so to rank # 6 on Yahoo for the generic term using a Forward captured my eye.
Can somebody confirm or explain more about the server side frame redirection and if this is what is used for Tires.com . I have an idea of how to do but I want to make sure.
you mean it will penalize the site for having duplicate content, not for the redirect right?
if the content is at one site only, and you are simply redirecting to this one site from 3, 4, 5 domains, in theory there should be no problem. At least I havent seen a problem.
