Hi guys,

just a quick one from me here, i currently run a website that promotes online gaming in the uk and europe such as casino games, poker, slots etc

i was just wondering if registering a domain related to the keyword i'm trying to target will help me bring in more traffic?

the keyword i'm targeting is 'uk online casino' and i have paid to have some seo work done and advertising etc, the domain is currently http://www.onlinegaming4u.co.uk/ but not receiving that much traffic. if i was to register another domain along the lines of http://www.ukonline-casinos.eu/ would this help bring in more traffic when listed with search engines

thanks in advance for any advice / comments

Alan

Having the targeted keywords in your domain name is a good thing, especialy if they are keywords that people search for. Of course there are alot more things to consider when it comes to SE optimization....

First your domain target specifically:

No, I can't see anyone using the terms ukonline-casino.eu to reach a casino site, i'll elaborate more in a moment:

First let me tell you about why natural type ins help, i.e when someone types in buy mortgage, mortgages rates etc.

Natural type ins help but it depends how much each visitor is worth to you really and how well your site converts those visitors into cash for you.

But seeings as how most names cost very little yearly, you can soon see why this becomes a more attractive prospect. I run an affiliate site which has now 30 names pointing to it, overkill you might think?. Not really because it converts well and only needs about 2 sales on its product to pay for all those domains.

Personally I like the idea of developing mini sites and having them point to your main sites, even if they are just a few pages, using them as feeder sites is a solid long term strategy. (Provided you host them using a different IP, i.e a different account)

Good examples are review sites, information sites that link back to yours for more detail or just plain old fashioned adverts

How can you find such a direct type in or heavily searched for name?:

Google Adwords -
https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal?defaultView=2
Overture -
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/

Or buy one that is currently registered or on sale because online casino names will be very tough to find free. Look at your budget, ask how much natural traffic the domain gets before you purchase, ask for a screen shot of the statistics so you know they are genuine and then make them an offer per visitor.

Now you can use a name such as you've suggested to develop a mini site which is also a good strategy but i'd avoid the hypen, avoid the .eu extension and avoid as many 'filler' words as possible, i.e uk and online together. One would be fine, two are overkill imho.

(Edited for a more comprehensive response.)

I agree. I don't think it's such a good idea to have other domain names redirect to your main site, because this may lead to dilution in the site's search engine score. However, Mark's approach- having relevant mini sites with links to the main site works really well. I use this all the time with reasonably good results. The mini sites help the SEO a lot, and slowly you're building a network of sites, which in turn helps get your future sites indexed in no time.

I've found that even links from my minisites that are in the same account (i.e. same IP) help, although I agree that it would be good to develop a network of sites using different accounts, as Mark said the SE's take that into consideration when weighing links.

Also it's worth remembering that, all else being equal, ccTLDs score substantially higher in local searches than TLDs. So if you're developing for the german market, it's worth using a .de as your main site. Also the same applies for SEO: the more links from .de sites, the better the SERP position in google.de searches.

I would think this goes for .co.uk domains as well, but I'm pretty sure there is any advantage to having a .eu domain in that respect.
