Do link directories produce revenue?

For anybody that runs a link directory, do those things make any meaningful revenue? I find myself submitting my sites to new ones all the time, but figured that I would ask since I don't know how many people actually surf them looking for something. Some of them are very smooth at blending in AdSense ads right in the middle of real links.

I have recently started to run a link directory. My main reason for starting it was that suddenly a domain got PR 5 from being PR 0 and it had a fitting domain so I wanted it to have a lot of subpages and the link directory was the best solution.

I have some adsense but I get no clicks. The reveny I get is payments for sitewide links and more reciprocal links to the dir from links that want to be "featured". If I get many of those ones perhaps it will go up to PR 6 ...

No, hardly anybody surfs the directories to find things. They use Google or another search engines. But you don't submit for that reason. You submit to get more links to your site and you have to choose those that has a decent PR and static URLs in order to improve your search engine rankings. A good example of this is DMOZ.com that is the biggest human edited dir. People listed there does not get so much traffic from the dir but their rankings get boosted, especially in Google.

Great feedback Jim. What you are doing (link/rank building) is what I suspected was the primary purpose. It's a good way to promote (rank/link wise) all of your other sites also. Any adsense revenue is just icing on the cake.
