Are directories really that good?

I mean directories that have SEO-friendly links. Are they worthwhile?

Which ones are scams, and which ones are not? I know of many directories that send you spam mail from submitting to them, even if you don't submit an email address.

I might start one or two and would like to know any advice also.

Thanks for any help,
-Matt

Myself, I don't look at directorys (like host directories, game directories, ect)
Usualy because if you sign up on them, they will send you spam as you said. I use google for all my linkes. Works out fine for me :)

alot of them send you spam
either them promoting a new site of theirs or actual penis enlargement spam i created an email account on each of my sites just for directories so know some spam...
too bad i didnt create a mail catchall address... so i could submit using [email protected] [email protected] etc...

im pretty sure google is going to start giving less weight to directory links all using the same script and tables and designs.... like the phpdirectoryscript one..

see if the pages on which the sites are listed have any PR and ALSO see how those pages rank in the various engines for the most relevant keywords related to those particular pages. dont bother about directories that want a link back etc ....

make your site good enough to be listed in dmoz.

It's good if:
1. The page has PR.
2. The page has less than 20 outgoing links.

Exceptions widely apply, but basically, PRs are spread evenly among links.. So, in the most basic case, if you are only linked on a PR3 page that has 10 links in total, you will get PR2. But a typical PR3 directory page would have around 30 links(same-site + outgoing), so, you are looking at PR1 - PR2.

Hope it helps.

I rarely use directories, let alone post my sites in them. I seem to get more spam email then traffic so I think it's more hassle than it's worth. Although there are a few directories that are good. :)

i only give my email address for listing at a directory if it has a high pr and even will go for reciprocal link, they can help on seo but not that much.

Have you guys thought that the reason your getting spam is because your signing up to useless free directories? Ive never recieved any spam from a directory :S
The only good worthwile directories are paid directories, ones with a max 15 outgoing links a page. I wont submit to any page less then pr5 because im paying $40+ each but they are LIFETIME high pr pages which are going to increase. Tell me where you can find quaility, lifetime content related pr5+ backlinks for less then $40 apart from at a directory?

PM me for some ideas, if you want, of how you can get as many PR4,5,6 backlinks as you want for free from non directory non-blog non-linkfarm high quality sites. :hi:

Same here, i Own number of web directories, but never sent any spam email. We list only quality resources in our directories, and all directories and inside pages have solid PR though.

You are an exception then, which is good. And by the way, I've just submitted two of my sites to DirectoryDelux.com! :tu:

In my case, i donยดt have many problems when submitting to recognized
directories but my nightmare comes when i make automated search
engine submissions (not FFA).

I had to create an alternative email for their spam.

My number one rule is "Do not create high-maintenance web sites."
Directories are high maintenance. You are always removing dead links.
No one with any imagination would waste their time developing a directory.

The right directory can send you decent traffic. Scope the the directory's quality and decide if it's a good fit with what you are trying to promote.

I use spamgourmet for much the same purpose. I can give everyone I need to give an email address a unique one and if it starts getting spammed it automatically switches off after 20 mails. As I know which address was given out I've got a pretty good idea of by who.
