DN Journal Cover Story: GeoDomain Giant Skip Hoagland on How to Get Domains Developed

With PPC revenues tanking there is a lot of talk among domain owners about developing but, even now, not a lot of action. Why? Because development is hard work and undertaking the task with just a single domain can sap all of a person's available time with no guarantee their developed site will be a hit with web surfers. Since the typical domainer has hundreds or even thousands of names in their portfolio, developing en masse looks more like an impossible dream than a real possibility.

Some say it just can't be done, but geo domain giant Skip Hoagland isn't buying it and a quick look at his many developed properties, including Atlanta.com, MyrtleBeach.com, HiltonHead.com and Buenos Aires.com, indicate that he knows what he is talking about. Hoagland has a hand in dozens of established websites with hundreds more on the horizon.

So what is his domain development secret? Hoagland's answer is "teaming up with the right partners." In our new Cover Story Hoagland tells us how he did it and why he thinks you can do it too:

Thank You Duke,

Another compelling story. Just the kind of story my wife would rather I not read. LOL I'll be quoting facts to her, about this story,
in an excited state.

Myrtle beach making 2mil a year is the dream of most domainers/developers. Having the quality names to do so is paramount to such success.
Paying 10k in 97, for a domain name, was a big step even for Myrtle Beach.

I really like the idea of development partnerships. I would really like to see an aggressive development movement here at NP's.
As the 800 and 400 pound gorillas have carved out the bulk of the PPC pie of late development will be the only way to go.

Great read Duke

Thanks for the article. It was a very interesting read.

I wish I can develop my geo name into a $2 million/per year earning business.

the city of Myrtle Beach and the city's Chamber of Commerce sued him in an effort to take the domain from him.

:S

I've got Myrtle-Beach.SC.... (plans to develop but won't refuse to look at offers)!

Looks like I've got some competition!

sounds like what trial and error had moved me towards - in a very small way, of course!

one other thing i do (and might be more useful for little guys like myself) is to find friends with an interest in a certain area, and buy the most generic possible names to suit them. even get them to help when choosing. then i partner-build sites. tailor made, it works better for me than buying names and looking for partners after the fact

:)
