I have recently read that the drone industry is trying to change the word "drone" to something different.

The word "drone" has a very bad rep. for obvious reasons.

What do you think will happen with the word "drone" and drone domain names?

to say a name as Drone, means its only one model this company will make.
Where as "Drones" they can come up with a whole line of the type.

I see someone filed in Oct/14 at the USPTO for a trademark on Police Drones. I'm thinking the 2 might be considered 'confusingly similar' in a trademark case. What might happen in an instance like that, where a domain name had been registered previous to the filing date by the original owner - registered Jan/12 - and bought by someone else after the filing date. Does the date of the original registration date carry over to the new owner of DronePolice.com and they have rights to challenge the trademark filing, based on that date?

Things appear to be heating up folks.
If you have a truely premium Drone/UAV related domain name, it's desirability and appeal will be not be restricted to interested parties only in the US. The marketplace is international, so don't be discouraged with the pace of the US Congress; although legislation is also being introduced there to speed things up here too.

As to the "noflyzone.org" .. it's a request only. The law is somewhat unsettled as to the height that the landowner has authority over the space above his land... with obvious exceptions for airports, Gov property, stadiums, etc

Hate to quote Wikipedia, but they state it in sufficient enough language as a retort:

"The law, in balancing the public interest in using the airspace for air navigation against the landowner's rights, declared that a landowner owns only so much of the airspace above their property as they may reasonably use in connection with their enjoyment of the underlying land. In other words, a person's real property ownership includes a reasonable amount of the airspace above the property"

IMO
After the drone adolescence the sky will be filled with pesky drones, maybe there will be a reserved layer for non professional drone operation, managed by traffic awareness/collision avoidance standardized systems/OSs, with forbidden zones (near airports, military, etc...)..
