I have recently read that the drone industry is trying to change the word "drone" to something different.

The word "drone" has a very bad rep. for obvious reasons.

What do you think will happen with the word "drone" and drone domain names?

Not really. Its right of registration is with the "Drone.co.uk" owner until 2019.

I grabbed DRONE CAMS .biz & DRONE MAGAZINES .net

I was surprised when I googled 'drone magazines' how many mags there are about drones.

I hate the .biz extension, but if you are selling or discussing Drone cams, the name is right to the point

I just grabbed DRONE QUIET .com also. Sounds like it would be great for a product or service offering to make drones more quiet

I was very excited about drones a year ago, but now I'm not so sure, only two really good sales in last 6 months - DroneCam com for $19k and Drones net for 17k

well, just a few hours ago I hand regged Mini Camera Drones / com , which is not bad for a handreg and it also has a couple of backlinks

someone dropped it too early if you ask me

It's never too late. Plenty of good names available after market and for good prices (because they wont be that cheap in the coming years if things continue as they are).
