I have been looking at SEO and it seems that you have to do a lot of work to get a good Google rank, if I were just to put keywords in my page, what sort of rank would I be looking at?

How much work it takes depends on the competition. If you are going against sites that have only a few inbound links then it should be a piece of cake.

Don't expect any results by only adding keywords to your page. The biggest element of SEO is getting inbound links with proper anchor text, preferrably on related pages.

There is only really two sites which have a lot of in bound links that are about the same things as my site. 1 has 1,043 and the other has about 13,000.

I was reading about tags and I gather that it helps a lot to use them, for example.

I could have:

h1 - Welcome to my golf site

p - this site is about golf - I should try and drop as many keywords here as I can?

h2 - golfing hot spots

p - golfing hot spots around the world

and so on....

How do I put these in page? is <h1>title</h1> - <p>body text</p>?

You are using the h1 and p tags correctly.

Backlinks are key. As an example of how powerful they are, you could do on-page optimization for golf but get backlinks for teddy bears and your site would rank better for teddy bears than golf.
