I've just received an email from Afternic confirming the new fees structure.

So it seems GD are committed to this change, they will not listen to anyone!

Even if a new Dan comes along it won't last in the same way it never lasted with Dan.

If a company starts undercutting, getting too big for their boots the big fish (GoDaddy) will just come along and swallow them up (buy) and then put prices up, it's how it works in any industry (buy out your competition).

Why not price that domain to begin with, with that counter offer?
>>Why not price that domain to begin with, with that counter offer?<<
because they will negotiate you down from there

One of the most affected by recent GD actions is Bodis. First, GD purchased DAN and destroyed Bodis partnership. Now, GD prompts customers to stop using bodis parking with built-in afternic/godaddy (!) forsale banner. Hope Bodis will survive....
the solution for Bodis is offering a beautiful landing page
and handle the transwer as an escrow

Only downside is now you will pay 25% for names sold via Afternic distribution network.

Problem is that big chunk of sales happen via Afternic so it is almost indispensable.

I don't think sedo works that way

I would have used DaaZ (just a lander alternative for those in need of one; while I'm still 100% at Afternic). tried them for a bit long time ago. Except their landers are through Cloudflare, which renders them mostly unusable.

I'll never understand that.

please tell me more about a cloudflare issue

I contacted Sedo.com and told them to forward my message to the management/CEO including link to this discussion and requirements like lease-to-own, 10%, pay per month option... Tomorrow I should receive an answer (Germany Timezone)

not sure actually

I have to disagree on this. Trust is the most important factor when you take money out of your pocket.

Also, from your end. Wire is OK but accepting Paypal payments for high value domains? Hell no.

on paypal you might lose your domain and the money

I have used Dan pretty much exclusively. I have never used Afternic.

I am confused about one aspect of this proposal.

If I add Afternic to my network and make a sale on Dan, my commission is 15%, right? But if the sale is made at Afternic I pay TWO 15% commissions? One commission to Dan because that's where my nameservers are and one commission to Afternic for a total 30% total commission?? Or just 15% because it's just one network??

Please explain how using Dan AND Afternic commissions work. Are there any situations in which you would be expected to pay stacked commissions ie 30%?
@James Iles
Just to clarify, if your domain is pointing to a Dan nameserver in this scenario, and the sale is made at Afternic, you pay a 15% commission - you're correct, it's one network :)

BTW DAN also charges 21% VAT on EU seller like me
So old 9% at DAN was actually 10.9%
And now 15% at DAN will become 18.14% O_o

Can @James Iles tell me why I should pay almost 19% commission to a landing page provider that takes my traffic and leads and has ZERO contribution to traffic on my domains?

And why should I stick with that provider and be penalized 25% if I chose better service?!!!

DAN has 21% only for customers living in TheNetherlands

as a business, you don't need to pay TheNetherlands VAT

you pay the VAT that is mandatory in your own country

Thank you. I think I understand most of it now. However, re "delete the name from Afternic", let me further ask.... for domains costing less than $5k, if I leave them at Afternic, then it'd be 15% commission, correct? It appears they charge 25% for domains pointing to nameservers elsewhere, but I'm still unclear of any example where this would apply. They have no knowledge of any sale pointed elsewhere (Sedo, Bodis using Escrow, direct sale using escrow, etc.). So I still don't get the 25% part of it, because clearly if they made a point of discussing it, it can happen (and likely often).
Hey @Sperry8, confirming that the 15% rate would apply to domains sold that point to nameservers ending in
  • afternic.com
  • smartname.com
  • uniregistrymarket.link
  • dan.com
  • undeveloped.com
  • internettraffic.com
  • cashparking.com

Have read all the replies, yes this sucks for most of you but for me if I get sales I will be happy even with 30% increase not just 15% of it.
Why should i bother when i hand reg those domains?

Great idea for GoDaddy actually...charge more in commissions the newer the registration date is. Really stick it to the hand reggers. Looks like the fees were not hiked enough for them to care.

Wow, so if someone forwards the traffic directly to the Dan.com lander pages, that is considered a 25% sale?

Someone types in example.com and it goes to the Dan.com lander, and the seller is charged 25%...

What terrible system design.

Brad

send me your traffic
I will only charge you 25%
if you send a customer

I think many of you are missing the point in this entire thing.

If you park your names anywhere, or even make it not resolve, most of your sales will come from afternic because of the distribution network and obviously they are part of godaddy.

you miss the point

I don't care to pay 25% if they sold it for me

but I care if I sold it
based on my own domain traffic
