Domain investors, welcome to another great Top Topics session here at NamePros:

Whois.com mass-canceled .io domain registrations after its price special backfired; Dan.com, a GoDaddy brand, jacked-up fees to 15% and domain investors aren't happy; A cache of premium stolen domain names was revealed, including W3.com; What exactly are premium domain names as far as registrar pricing is concerned? A domain investor's measly sale converts into a massive sale by their buyer and he feels terrible.

Whois.com is a fraud. They cant and wont process .io domain names from 1/3/2023
Domain investors that took advantage of a Whois.com special pricing for .io domains found that these domains were missing from their account 2 days later. Standard .IO pricing is around $65 versus the ~$4 special pricing; a bad decision by Whois.com that issued refunds and deleted all registered domains.

Dan.com to increase commission from 9% to 15% effective Feb 1st 2023
GoDaddy-owned Dan.com gained popularity among investors, who are now facing a 6% price increase in fees. The price increase is matched by Uni Market price increases, while Afternic's 5% decrease is offset by a loss of tiered pricing. Domainers are furious as a 25% fee affects those that opt out of using GoDaddy's DNS. Join the discussion that's two dozen pages long and counting.

Stolen domain names
IP attorney, John Berryhill, shared news with the domain investor community about a cache of domains stolen from their lawful registrant. W3.com, LAS.com, AAO.com are among those stolen so find out the full list and read updates about the recovery effort.

What does it mean a premium domain?
Premium domains are "typically" domains that are short (under 4 letters), or belong to the better part of a popular language's dictionary. There is another type of premium domains: those the registry or the registrar considers to be of a certain quality that warrants a higher than standard pricing. Find out how this affects a domain's valuation and reselling worth.

Missing Out On A Huge Offer
A few years after selling a domain for less than $200, a domain investor realizes that his buyer was able to flip that sale for much, MUCH more. Seeing a sale in the five figures for a domain you owned previously can be gut-wrenching! Domain investors chip in with their own experience and advice.

A pretty heavy news week! Thanks for the roundup up topics, @Acroplex.

Clearly a lot to unwind in the commission "alignment", both for domain investors and for impacted other companies such as brandable places, listing services, and parking services, among others.

Re:
tandard .IO pricing is around $65
It is some places, but I think the more competitive registrars for .io have around low 30's to register, and high 30's to renew. Still a lot though!

I can't imagine what was in their minds whoever let this happen at Whois.

Thanks again,

Bob
