Thanks for the questions @Dane and @branding.

@James Iles

I have an active lead where the sale will not be completed before February.

As I don't use Dan's dns, does that mean I will pay 25% commission?

What's the time of determining what DNS is being used? When the lead comes in or when the sale is closed?

What about ongoing negotiations on leads that came in before Feb 1st?

I would update to dan dns if it wasn't part of the agreement between me and the buyer to use his dns for development.

Buyer has my details so wondering if it's best to close at dan or just take it to sedo.
I appreciate your questions, and I hope these responses provide some additional clarity for you:

1. If your domain is pointing to any of these nameservers ending in:
  • afternic.com
  • smartname.com
  • uniregistrymarket.link
  • dan.com
  • undeveloped.com
  • internettraffic.com
  • cashparking.com

Then your commission rate is 15%. If your domain points elsewhere, it's the 25% rate.

2. The rate is determined at the time of the sale.

3. I think #2 answers this one, but to clarify, the rate is determined at the time of the sale.

This question was asked somewhere but I can't find the post to see if it was answered...

I know that the new Dan/Afternic commission structure starts on Feb 1st. Is that based on the start of a negotiation? Or on the date the name sells? If an Afternic negotiation started today but the name doesn't sell until Feb 2nd, what would the commission be? Anyone know?

This is based on the date that the domain name sells.

I am in one of these situations. I asked the GoDaddy broker what will happen if the sale occurs after this month. He said he had told the buyer that the negotiated price would only be valid until the end of January and that payment has to be submitted by then.

So I guess all deals closed after this month will be subject to the new commission no matter when negotiations began.

Edit: Seems James Iles has just confirmed this

I was getting a discount on their Domain Buying Club. Had it for years. Then a GoDaddy rep told me that I don't need to pay for that club since I was already paying them for a Reseller account... which (I was told) gives me the same discount on domain name purchases. So I stopped paying for the Domain Club. Guess what? The rep was wrong, it does NOT give the discount. Now GoDaddy won't give me the discount on their Domain Buying Club. I'm screwed because a GoDaddy rep gave me wrong information.
I'd be interested in hearing more about that. Please feel free to DM me.

That's a clear answer. Thanks.

Btw, it would be cheaper to deliver the domain in person instead of being charged 25%
You brought back some old memories for me.

On a higher value name I flew to meet the buyer (had a craving for an In-n-Out burger as well) and we made the deal over lunch. It was a hoot observing the people around us as we talked and exchanged our treasure!

Nice. That's the best way to do business. In person over a nice burger and beers (well, not at lunchtime maybe) ;)

OK, so then, I can host my name away from GD nameservers. Then get a notification of a lead. Then switch to GD nameservers, then the sale completes, and then I pay the lesser commission.

Somehow I doubt that but it's what you just said. I think. Such convoluted practices we are in for.

My thoughts exactly, but I hesitated to post it publicly. Didn't wanna give GoDaddy any incentive to change the rules! ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

The misinformation relayed by GD phone reps is astounding. Consequently, I haven't dealt with them for almost a decade. But I recall patiently enduring their blather and completely tuning them out. That GD refused you the discount is beyond the pale.

Is that back when all domains were painstakingly engraved into precious metals?

LOL, I traded him a name for his currency. We had our laptops open and timed the exchange to coincide...like playing battleship in the old days. Wow...that was over 25 years ago. Time be flying.

@James Iles

I just (received and) accepted an offer on Dan at 10:26pm EST, Jan 31, my local time, for the domain name DenmarkWA.com. I accepted rather than countered because I wanted the deal done prior to Feb 1. I probably left some money on the table. I never accept the first offer without countering, but the better commission rate was on my mind and persuaded me to accept the first offer.

The problem is, as I realized looking in the DAN deal messenger afterward, is that it timestamped the deal as 04:26am on DAN local time Feb 1.

I will NOT be a happy camper if you guys take 15% from me because its 4:30am Feb 1 in The Netherlands.

It's still January 31 here and I only made the sale with zero negotiation because it is Jan 31 HERE. I know I left money on the table and I don't appreciate the position that I was put in. I feel I was probably financially harmed as a result of the timing of this offer relative to the time on my clock.

I expect the 9% commission rate to apply. Please confirm.

Thanks
Eric

I'd recommend talking to the Dan support team about individual transactions - I don't have access to the data to confirm anything personally.

Hi Eric,

Thanks for reaching out.

It doesn't matter when the deal was closed but when the payment is done. We didn't receive any payments until today so once we receive the payment, the commission fee will be 15%.

Kind regards,
Luz

Once again I learn all the benefits of feeding GoDanny's greed. I feel so lucky! You all should, too!
I can help you informing you of the changes in the commission fee as it was informed in the emails.

I cannot help you changing the commission fee manually. Please note the decision to align commissions across GoDaddy brands was not something that was taken lightly. At Dan, our mission remains to democratize the domain-buying process and help Sellers sell more domains. We have proven this over the years with game-changing features like our Lease-To-Own model, domain rentals, and our industry-leading landing pages. We have seen first-hand how these initiatives have significantly grown the overall market; theyโ€™re also among the reasons, along with Sellers like you, that have made Dan a success to date.

This commission alignment will allow us to take our innovations even further, so that we stay ahead of the competition, continue to broaden the pool of buyers and increase your bottom line.

We will always be ready to help you with anything that is at our hand.

Kind regards, (Luz)

Maybe I should set up a lander elsewhere, and see if the buyer returns
Unfortunately, most of the wonderful marketplaces keep all the contact info to themselves. Vultures and pimps all.
