Criteria involved before you RENEW a domain?

What criteria or metrics do you use when analyzing whether or not to renew a domain? If you aren't doing this already, what factors do you feel would determine whether or not you'll renew any of that next list of 100s of expiring names.

Example:
- keyword popularity
- cpc
- domain age
- what other tlds are taken

Looking for things that can be automated mostly, so current traffic or income can only be estimated, as these are things only the current owner will really know, assuming the domain is being monetized.

My main criteria is -

Does this domain have a use?

Metrics matter here (search volume, CPC, competition, etc). There has to be at least some demand for the term.

Would an end user want it?

Would an end user be willing to put the time and money to developing a website on this domain?

Could it be used for a primary website?

Would this be the only domain an end user needed, their primary website, or is it or secondary usage?

I also look at traffic and revenue stats.

The first criteria I look at is, is it paying it's own regfees? If it does, renew it. I might even go down to paying half it's regfees. Below that it's usually a drop.

Any domain not paying its own regfees, I look at the metrics. Usually I've got to like the domain as well, two words, 12 or under characters, meaningful. For me it's all a bit touchy feely if it's not paying its own way. But Search volume and cpc are considered. Most of them with minimal cpc get dropped unless search volume is high. Age and other tlds are also factors.

My main criteria: Google exact searches.

Other criterias: other tlds taken, similar sales and "the feeling" :D

Asking these questions of yourself may help:

1- Have I made a dreadful mistake in buying it in the first place?

2- How well similar domain names have done in the sales?

3- Can I really add to its value by developing it or deriving income from it?

4- Can I flip it if the market turns around within the next year?

My first criteria is to determine if is really is a useful name or not. This would include looking at whether other extensions are taken.

If the name is okay, but nothing special, I will look at parking revenue and renew if it pays for itself or almost.

Never had more than 150 domains but cutting it right back to the best quality possible with what I have.
This is generally what I look for:
Mainsteam exts
Previous Sales,
Amount of Searches,
There are good websites on lesser quality keywords/ and extensions in the same niche
Generic'ness of it.
Advertisers (and quality)
CPC
Liquidity (generally easy enough to move on or if required sell at cost)
If for longterm hold) I need think I have an interest or connection to the keyword.

Alternative extensions. .me/pro/info/ hacks
good keyword or niche.
high XXX sales in other alternative extensions.
Good alternative use (ie phrase hack/hack or app purpose)

Most of the domains I have sold to end users didn't make much parking income at all so I judge strictly based on the name itself.

Does it make sense and have commercial appeal to a business?

Would I buy it if I was in that business?

Are there many alternatives available for reg fee?
