Having relatives and friends scattered all over the globe, I am getting an overload of input (some on the record and some off the record).

My intention for this thread is for community members from around the world to post first hand stories and/or links to information sources that, for the most part, should be reliable.

In my community, just outside a major southeastern city, 'assets' have been placed. Only because I have friends in both high and low places have I heard about some of this. At this point it is only some basic medical supplies that should be equally distributed anyway in preparation for a natural emergency (hurricane/wildfire/etc.).

I will start with posting a link to a site with current data that seems to come from an aggregate of sources and hope others will do the same as they come across similar sites/pages.

Because of the 'typhoid Mary' spread-ability of this disease, I feel we may be in for a really large spread globally which will impact the global economy and through extension, retail domain prices.

One thing is for sure...things will get worse before they get better.

Interestingly, a drug that has been in use for decades - Ivermectin, has shown good potential prophylactic effect (86%) against Covid-19. Inexpensive and readily available, this drug has been mostly overlooked. It might be considered a safe alternative to vaccines (do your research first).

Wait... I always assumed a prophylactic was another word for a condom.:sorry:

I second that. Very glad to hear that you are still with us mate :)

You went jogging with cracked ribs?

Ouch!

... and I think @MasterOfMyDomains has left the building. Hopefully all is well with him also.

Thanks!

Also, many thanks to you for keeping the numbers posted and up to date. I don't think that circumstance causing my absence is likely to happen again (at least I hope it does not come up again).

Yes, even though I had them taped, it was a mistake to 'jog'...this morning we just had a brisk walk. :xf.smile:

‘No concept of how awful it was’: the forgotten world of pre-vaccine childhood in Australia

It’s 1940, and a five-year-old boy lies in an oxygen tent. He struggles for breath and hallucinates that his leaden toy soldiers are alive and marching around the room, monstering him with their bayonets.

He has diphtheria, a disease also known as the Strangling Angel. There is a vaccine, but not every child has been inoculated. The bacterial infection creates a membrane across the back of the throat, cutting off air supply.

The little boy’s mother, sitting a desperate vigil next to the oxygen tent, has seen diphtheria take other children.

Thanks, an interesting read.

The article mentions how smallpox tore through and wiped out the aboriginal communities who were living around Port Jackson (present-day Sydney) when the First Fleet arrived.

Unfortunately we may see a similar decimation of our first nations people over the coming months, as coronavirus has escaped Sydney into a few communities over the last week.

Dicey times as we don't yet know how it will affect their mob.

The “vast majority” of Covid cases in western New South Wales are among Aboriginal people, and 40% are in largely unvaccinated Aboriginal children aged between 10 and 19 years old, according to the western NSW local health district.

The COVID-19 crisis in western NSW Aboriginal communities is a nightmare realised

Numbers are going back up...

U.S. reports more than 1,000 COVID deaths in single day

(Reuters) -The United States reported more than 1,000 COVID-19 deaths on Tuesday, equating to around 42 fatalities an hour, according to a Reuters tally, as the Delta variant continues to ravage parts of the country with low vaccination rates.

Coronavirus-related deaths have spiked in the United States over the past month and are averaging 769 per day, the highest since mid-April, according to the Reuters tally https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps.

President Joe Biden's administration confirmed on Tuesday evening it planned to extend requirements for travelers to wear masks on airplanes, trains and buses and at airports and train stations until mid-January.

However, U.S. hospitals continue to flood with new patients as COVID-related hospitalizations have increased by about 70% in the past two weeks.

Orlando residents asked to limit water usage to help Covid-19 patients

(CNN)Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is asking residents to conserve water because liquid oxygen, used to treat the community's water supply, is needed to treat the surge of Covid-19 patients in the community.

"Nationally, the demand for liquid oxygen is extremely high as the priority for its use is to save lives," the mayor said in a Facebook post on Friday.

To reduce demand, the Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC) asked customers to immediately limit watering their lawns and landscapes, take short showers, repair leaking faucets and toilets, stop washing their vehicles and performing "non-critical activities" like pressure washing, the municipal utility said in a notice.

Moderna approval should come in 6 weeks or so...

U.S. FDA aims to give full approval to Pfizer vaccine on Monday

WASHINGTON, Aug 20 (Reuters) - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is aiming to give full approval to Pfizer's (PFE.N) COVID-19 vaccine on Monday, the New York Times reported on Friday.

Regulators were aiming to complete the process by Friday, but were still working through "a substantial amount of paperwork and negotiation with the company," the Times said, citing people familiar with the planning who were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

The agency declined to comment.

It had set an unofficial deadline for approval of around Labor Day on Sept. 6, the report said.

The approval could boost the vaccination campaign by convincing more unvaccinated Americans that Pfizer's shot is safe and effective and also make local officials more comfortable in implementing vaccine mandates.

This is long read but it has quite a lot of information.

New SARS-CoV-2 variants have changed the pandemic. What will the virus do next?

Edward Holmes does not like making predictions, but last year he hazarded a few. Again and again, people had asked Holmes, an expert on viral evolution at the University of Sydney, how he expected SARS-CoV-2 to change. In May 2020, 5 months into the pandemic, he started to include a slide with his best guesses in his talks. The virus would probably evolve to avoid at least some human immunity, he suggested. But it would likely make people less sick over time, he said, and there would be little change in its infectivity. In short, it sounded like evolution would not play a major role in the pandemic’s near future.

“A year on I’ve been proven pretty much wrong on all of it,” Holmes says.

Well, not all: SARS-CoV-2 did evolve to better avoid human antibodies. But it has also become a bit more virulent and a lot more infectious, causing more people to fall ill. That has had an enormous influence on the course of the pandemic.

New Zealand won’t ‘throw in towel’ on Covid-zero strategy despite rising infections

New Zealand’s Covid response minister says the country will not “throw in the towel” with its elimination strategy, as cases continue to rise.

New Zealand announced 63 new cases of Covid-19 on Wednesday, bringing the total to 210 cases. It is the largest single-day jump since the outbreak began last week, and 12 people are hospitalised with the virus.

Some commentators and media overseas have questioned whether the country should continue its elimination strategy, but Covid-19 response minister Chris Hipkins said the country would be staying its course.

This happened in mid-May.

Unvaccinated teacher infected half her students with Covid, CDC finds

An unvaccinated teacher in a California elementary school infected half her students and 26 people in total when she contracted the Covid-19 Delta variant, researchers for the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found.

The researchers said the teacher attended school for two days despite displaying symptoms of Covid-19, and read aloud to her class without a mask during that time. Infections corresponded to the classroom’s seating chart, with the students sitting closest to the teacher the most likely to be infected.

Covid cases in England are 26 times higher than a year ago

Coronavirus infections in England are now 26 times the levels that were experienced this time last year, according to the Office for National Statistics. Scientists described the figures as “sobering”.

They warned that the reopening of schools in England this week was likely to trigger further rises in Covid cases – with more to follow when students return to universities and colleges. A fresh wave of infections could, in turn, lead to new social restrictions being imposed as winter approaches.

I guess that makes 3 of them so far:

3rd conservative radio host who condemned vaccines dies of Covid

https://www.politico.com/states/flo...-who-condemned-vaccines-dies-of-covid-1390555

Sounds like all 3 changed their minds on getting vaxxed, once they got covid.

I just learned my great nephew (6 months) has covid because the elderly couple that baby sat for a couple hours a day lied and said they had been vaccinated. The wife is at home and she is severely ill...the husband is in the hospital

Just found out my niece (baby's mother) and her husband are sick with diarrhea and both have sore throats, but unlike the ignorant before mentioned, they have had the vaccine. Almost a dozen other family members that were exposed to the baby are self quarantining

This is what has been worrying me ... all the kids who might get exposed by careless adults.

Let's hope for a healthy outcome for all your family members.

The very best to your family.

As for the elderly couple who thought they were being 'smart', or 'cute', or 'macho', or were just too stupid to actually get vaxxed, and then lied about it....

The death of the 30-year-old father of three young girls was first reported by his pregnant wife, Jessica Wallace, on a GoFundMe page she had set up for donations to help with medical and household bills.

3 kids and 1 on the way, now without a dad. This is also on other anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers, for encouraging him on.
