.co.uk Whois not working properly?

Just been searching for names in the .uk extention & came across some nice ones that are apparently available. Searched different companies like Godaddy, Moniker, Mydomain, IDotz & all of them said they're available. Went to Moniker to register them & then all the orders failed. Went to DomainTools.com & checked them & it looks like they've been registered for ages!

Is this a recent thing with the co.uk Whois or does it happen often saying names are available when in fact they've been taken ages ago?

Ya something's wrong with the whois...saw a fabulous name available, rushed to register it on Moniker and poof. Failed. :td:

Knew it was too good to be true. LOL.

I actually found about 10 very nice names including a popular Girl's 1st name that are "available" but not really available

It doesn't appear to be doing this with me! If you go to Nominet.org.uk you may find that they are reserved domains. Not all WHOIS searches show anything but "Available" or "Registered".

To get the true story I suggest going to their site and viewing the exact WHOIS results.

A lot of these companies don't understand that there are domains that cant be registered in some extensions.

They actually reserved names, but already registered by other individuals. When I used DomainTools.com, it showed who owned those domains.

I had the same thing yesterday :hehe:
Truly sucks when you get that email reporting it didn't go through.

Yes Ive had that before also, but not with .CO.UKs. Like Thinking two letter .INFOs were registrable! ahhh :(

I still recommend using the root WHOIS on their website just to be sure next time though :)

cheers
