On Jan 22nd, CNNIC published the 37th China Internet Development Statistics Report (hereinafter referred as the report). The report indicates that till Dec, 2015, the population of Chinese internet users has reached 688 million with the prevalence rate of 50.3%. That is to say more than half of the Chinese are now connected to the internet. Meanwhile the mobile network has dramatically changed people’s lifestyle and the strategic plan of “Internet+” has greatly promoted the substantial development of business. The impact of internet on the whole society has now stepped into a new stage.


More than half of Chinese have accessed the internet, 90% of which use the mobile network.

Until Dec, 2015, the population of Chinese internet users has reached 688 million with the prevalence rate of 50.3%. The number of new increment in 2015 is about 39.51 million and the growth rate is 6.1%, which increased by 1.1% over 2014. The growth pace has accelerated.

The report also shows that as there is a growing tendency of accessing the internet through mobile devices, the popularity of mobile phone has become the biggest driving factor for the growing population. Till Dec, 2015, the population of mobile network users has reached 620 million. More than 90.1% internet users would use mobile device to access the internet. The number of users using mono access of mobile network was 127 million, taking up 18.5% of the total amount.


“.CN” Domain Names has reached the No. 1 in number among the CCTLDs and the Internet Export Bandwidth has marked a new record.

Till Dec 2015, the retention of “.CN” Domain Names has reached 163.6 million and the annual growth rate was 47.6%, taking up 52.8% of the total number of Chinese domain names. The retention number of “.cn” domain names has exceed that of “.de” domain names and become the Top 1 ccTLD domain name in number.

At same time, to cater the active need of international internet communication, the internet export bandwidth has marked a new record. Till Dec 2015, the internet export bandwidth in China has reached 5,392,116 Mbps, with an annual growth rate of 30.9%, which marks the significant improvement in the capacity of network in China.


With the spread of wireless Wi-Fi, mobile network is more accessible.

With the effort of the government and the enterprises on the Smart City Project and Wireless City Project, the public wireless network has spread with rapid speed. Mobile phone, tablet PC and Smart TV have driven the growth of the home wireless network. 91.8% of the users access the internet via Wi-Fi, increasing by 8.6% since June 2015. Now Wi-Fi has become the first choice to connect to the internet in the fixed places like home and office.

The upgrade of internet environment and spread of mobile network have both stimulated the desire of internet application. In the year of 2015, the personal applications of basic utilization, business trade, online finance, online entertainment and public service have all been burgeoning and flourish, among which the mobile payment businesses boosted to a most extend. Till Dec 2015, the population of mobile internet payment user has reached 358 million and the growth rate was 64.5%. The ratio of mobile payment in internet payment grew from 39.0% to 57.7% since 2014.

Besides, the increment of internet users and the strong demand of the market promote a more extensive development of internet application. In the year of 2015, 110 million internet users accepted online education, 152 million internet users employed online medical service, and 9.6 million have used online car-booking service among which 2.1 million booked special car. With the advantages of general preferential, convenient and sharable online service, internet has already penetrated into the public service area, providing the citizens an effective and efficient access to public service and stimulating the improvement of the society.


Increasing ration in business application, the strategic plan of Internet+ has promotes the development of enterprises.

The Chinese enterprises have now relied on the internet in the daily operation more than any time before. The report shows that till Dec 2015, the computer utilization ration, the internet utilization ration and the fixed broadband connect ration have increased 4.8%, 10.3% and 8.9% year on year, attaining to 95.2%, 89.0% and 86.3%. The number of Chinese website has run up to 4.23 million, with a 0.88 million increment since 2014 and the annual growth ratio of 26.3%. Meanwhile the number of Chinese web page has outstripped 200 billion for the first time. Internet is now widely used in the Chinese enterprises for communication, information acquiring and releasing, and internal management. All these changes set up the basement for the strategic plan of Internet+ in the future.

Internet is no longer simply an auxiliary tool in business but a significant component of business strategy. Enterprises now attach a growing concern on recruiting the internet talents; pay more attention to the online sales and procurement and use the mobile network to conduct marketing. The efforts made by the enterprises all manifest the importance of the internet application in the business.

The report also indicates that till Dec 2015, 34% of the enterprises have set up special positions for Internet related functions; 24.4% of the enterprises have recruited Internet related business unit, and in 13.0% of the enterprises, the decision-making level directly preside the internet strategy. Driven by the booming Chinese online business, more than 30% of the enterprises are conducting online sales and procurement, which activate the online business in return. With the wide use of mobile network, mobile marketing has become an important channel for business promotion. Wechat is the most popular approach among the enterprises conducting mobile promotion, with a utilization ratio of 75.3%.

Another great piece of information about the state of the Internet and domain industry in China!

Just to add to what you said, the total number of domain names in China increased 51% from 21m in 2014 to 31m in 2015, with .cn taking 53% market share and .com 36%. So we see that .cn is king in terms of volume but .com is still king in terms of price.
