I mentioned this while reporting / requesting a title change for "Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout" to remove the (in your account part). But figured it would likely be best to post the rest here:

Because the strategies for domain purchases differ quite a bit depending on type, I really think having clearly distinguished threads for each type of purpose would make discussions significantly more on topic and helpful. until recently there was just:

1- Your reg. of the day
2- Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs)

Then few months ago I started:

3- Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout (in your account)

Would really like to see these threads being more clear and better separated from each other .. as people seem to still post auction/closeout buys in the "Purchase/snap of day"

I'm thinking for clarity's sake they be split into the following better defined threads:

1- Report Domains You Purchased Hand Registered
    2- Report Domains You Drop-Caught/Snapped
3- Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout
4- Report Existing Domains You Bought at Fixed Price (BIN or Negotiated)

If you'd like I could write up new helpful intros for each like I did for Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout

Although in the case you don't want to close the older ones in order to start fresh, maybe just change the titles for the first 2 .. and then I could make a short intro for the 4th one ..

    Let me know! :)

  2. Thanks for taking the time to make this suggestion.

We can't change the purpose of a thread, but we can change the title of a thread to clarify it (And members can also start new threads that are slightly different than existing threads). That way, it will be better understand (but still have the same purpose as the OP intended).

If you could link us to specific links and the title you suggest that we use for it, we'll be happy to take it into consideration (We'll most likely make the title changes that you suggest).

I think that will go a long way into fixing the confusion and any mixups related to multiple report threads.

    Thanks again,

The links are actually in the first post above .. I specifically kept the same number (1 through 3) for the proposed renames. But putting them together .. here's what I would suggest ...

1- Report Domains You Purchased Hand Registered
    2- Report Domains You Drop-Caught/Snapped
3- Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout
4- Report Existing Domains You Bought at Fixed Price (BIN or Negotiated)

(I'll create #4 as a new thread now in this section .. and then you can move it the General if you decide to go ahead with everything else)

The problem is really in the name for #2 "Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs)" .. The title is just too open ended and wrongly takes from other types of buys by using the very unprecise term "Your purchase" .. which basically means any type of buy. That being said .. there's obviously a lot of different types of buys in that thread now .. so I'm not sure if you just want to keep it as it is (possibly close it with a final post linking to each of the other more descriptive types), or start another one with just Drop-Caught domains right from the start?

    Ok .. so I created #4 here:
Report Domains You Bought at Fixed Price (BIN or Negotiated)

Feel free to move it into General whenever you like. (Ideally as you change/clarify the other titles).

I'm split as to where to include the word "Report" at the start of each .. it might be a little redundant .. but also could make them a little clearer .. you decide .. lol

Hi again .. Eric was kind enough to write me to let me know he was holding off on changing the titles until he consulted with his colleges as 2 of them are long standing threads and changing them could lead to some confusion. I just wanted to share my reply here as an expansion to my original idea ...

    Quoting myself .. lol:
"Yeah .. I understand the dilemma .. that's why I left the 4th one out of General at first. Don't think it has much point being there while the other combined thread "Purchase + Snap" (2 very different things IMO) is still there in it's current form. Too bad it was started like that .. I really think the 4 different types of buys should have their own conversations.

If it were up to me I'd actually go so far as to start an entirely new forum "Your Domain Buys".
Put those older threads in there .. but closed. Then have the 4 main threads as stickies at the top. That would even let others post their buys in separate threads if they wish to discuss them further.
    "

ok .. well .. looks like this isn't going to happen .. could one of you then at least remove the "(In Your Account)" from the title of my thread since the changes at GD have made this far less of a concern than in the past.

3- Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout (in your account)

Unfortunately, it's not that simple. We have to confirm that the edit does not change the purpose of the thread, conflict with or duplicate any other threads, and confirm that it provides clarity over the existing title.

We will work on this as soon as we can.

    Thanks for your patience.

I actually reported your thread when you started it because I felt it would just make things more confusing and the NP should just retitle this thread:

2- Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs)

That thread has always been everything but hand regs type of thread. Names you got from Namejet, Snapnames, GoDaddy etc. You can just read from the beginning to see that.

Your thread with - "Domains You Won at Auction"

was already being posted in this thread - Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs)

Your thread also combines different activity. Buy Now vs. Auction

From the Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs), first post:

"This is only for domain names which you bought from other people or which you snapped with Backorder Services like Snapnames, Namejet, Godaddy, etc."

That covered just about everything. Names you might have caught with NJ, Snap etc. that might have been deleted names, pre-release names. Also names you bought directly from people. Auctions from any marketplace etc.

It's just easier to read when it's all in one place, vs. many different threads and less confusion.

    Hand Regs

    Everything Else

"as people seem to still post auction/closeout buys in the "Purchase/snap of day"

It's because again, easy, that thread has been there since 2012, and it is for auctions, so if people post auctions there, it's because it's in the right place.

If you add even more threads, people will start posting stuff in all the wrong places, just makes it confusing.

@JB Lions .. while I certainly agree it might be a little confusing in the short term .. I do believe the longer term effects of separating Auction wins with Closeouts (not all BINs) from Hand Reg's, snaps and BINs will hugely benefit members as strategies for each type of buy differ significantly from each other.

I was very deliberate in keeping Closeouts with Auction wins as many (including myself) might be hesitant to specifically share closeouts alone as that in itself would give away a specific purchase price of between $5 and $11 .. so I felt most people would be more willing to share in cases where they don't want exact purchase price known.

At this point it's been open almost half a year and has gained momentum .. kinda a waste to stop it now I'd think.

I personally found the other thread too busy and that conversations and discussions get lost there .. ultimately defeating the point of even posting it in a forum if there's no easy possibility for discussions before the context gets lost in a sea of other reported names purchased under completely different and incomparable settings.

At this point there is vastly more than enough people reporting their buys to merit the splitting. The benefits will be huge in terms of contextual discussions. Even the way the 2 older threads are now, the titles and first posts aren't as clear as they could be and there is spillover between the 2.

The entirety of the changes I originally proposed certainly is a question of short term pain for significant long term gain.

@Support Team .. While I'd obviously love for all the changes I originally proposed above to be fully implemented .. I've kinda given up on that and all I'm talking about now is changing the title of the one specific thread from:

Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout (In Your Account)
    to
Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout

The reason for this is because the changes implemented at GoDaddy last Nov/Dec have significantly reduced the number of domains that can be clawed back after winning an auction. So the "(in your account)" is now effectively redundant (or at least enough so now that it doesn't merit to be a distraction in the title) .. the suggestion to wait until the domain is safely in your account is still in the first post (and can be kept there just as a friendly reminder to those who are paranoid about clawbacks).

If you actually feel strong enough that it should stay .. then you should also add "(in your account)" to the end of the title of the Purchase/Snap thread .. as it's even more important to wait until the domain is in your account in those circumstances.

The simplest way would be just to merge this thread:

Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout (in your account)

    into the already existing:

Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs) - then just retitle this thread so it's more clear.

You started this thread because you felt this was a problem - ".. as people seem to still post auction/closeout buys in the "Purchase/snap of day"

The Snap of the Day thread is where people were posting auction buys for almost 6 years now, as well as closeouts. I posted my own NJ and Snap win on page 1 of that thread.

So because you started that new thread, it made things more confusing, because we now have 2 different threads where people are posting their auction wins.

If somebody today started a new GoDaddy coupon thread, the correct action should be message that person with a link to the long, already existing GoDaddy coupon thread, and then merge that post into the already existing thread.

That's what should have happened in this case as well. We don't need 2 threads posting up auction wins.

So you want to split 1 thread that has been working just fine for almost 6 years now, into 3 different threads, when it just needed a retitle.

I'm telling you these 2 threads:

    2- Report Domains You Drop-Caught/Snapped
3- Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout

You'll have people constantly posting in the wrong thread. Are you meaning drop-caught/Snapped as deleting names where there is only 1 bidder? Because ones with multiple bids go to auction.

I get what you're saying .. but respectfully disagree.

And yes .. admittedly .. clearer/separated threads don't "need" to be there .. and by your same argument it would actually be even simpler to merge both the old threads and just have one simple thread. I'm not sure when the 2nd thread was created, but it split off at some point and everyone survived! ;)

However, merging everything into a single thread, or even keeping the status quo 2 threads, I think is at a detriment to potential discussions and sharing of information. The simple fact of having the domains listed in different clearly separated threads (without discussion) would already be significantly more informative .. but added to that is the fact that more discussions will be generated from everything being in context and the overall benefits to both NamePros and the community are huge.

lol .. I would LOVE to separate my listings thread .. I agree 100% my lists would be better and clearer for all if separated .. but NamePros only allows one active thread there. It even limits posts to 12 hours apart or people don't get notified .. which sucks because I'd love to post my closeout lists earlier the evening before, while waiting longer for the auctions so as to keep names with bids as accurate as possible.

Since I have a business account I'm actually considering creating a 2nd account just so I can indeed make the lists separate and clearer for members! ;)

I didn't mention separating your listing thread, I pointed out you got your listing thread confused with the other thread you made.

That link goes to your listing thread, not the Auction/Closeout thread.

    Goes here:

No worries .. again .. I want to be clear that my suggestion does change things up .. and does create short term pain .. but I feel very strongly that it will be for long term gain. Much more importantly .. I think the ultimate result will be more discussions and more actual content.

Sigh .. my bad then .. maybe I need to change the name of my thread .. lol .. I have too many open tabs all over the place. :dead:

Most people will still post their auction wins in the same thread they have been for 6 years, not the one somebody started 5 months ago. I know I will. If you're wanting mods to continually move posts around into the new threads, I wish everybody luck on that one.

Actually .. what I thought would be the best solution is:

1- Creating an entire new forum "Domains Purchases" (or something similar).

2- Move and close the "Snap/Reg" thread there.

3- Move "Reg of the Day", "Fixed Price / BIN" and "Auctions/Closeouts"

4- Create a new dedicated "Snap" thread

So essentially you have a new forum entirely dedicated to the purchase of domains divided clearly into the 4 different threads I originally proposed. With the 5th (closed/obsolete) "Snap/Reg" thread there for reference.

    1- Report Domains You Purchased Hand Registered - {Existing/Renamed}
    2- Report Domains You Drop-Caught/Snapped - {New Thread}
    3- Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout - {Existing}
    4- Report Existing Domains You Bought at Fixed Price (BIN or Negotiated) - {Existing, Dormant}
    0- Your Purchase or Snap of the Day (No Handregs) - {Existing/Closed}

That is the ideal way to grow out of the past (and admittedly current) confusion, and more importantly, after a short adjustment period, I feel it would actually increase discussion and activity .. as well as actually being a clearer system than it both is and was.

All that being said .. I've noticed a growing moderation reaction time in the forums .. so I was guessing something like that wouldn't even be considered for a while ... lol .. which is why all I was realistically asking for at this point in time is a simple title change! ;)

We updated that recently to 3 active threads:

Not to minimize your request or most user-generated reports, but many of them are not high priority items. We certainly appreciate them and will work on them as soon as we can, but there are significantly more urgent matters that we have to attend to each day first (e.g., preventing fraud, catching bad actors, blocking spammers, resetting auctions, stopping hack attempts, keeping up with security standards and updates, improving our infrastructure, etc.), and those take priority.

Once those are handled, we work on the less pressing matters as we have time.

    Thanks for understanding.

lol .. please don't in any way think that I am not understanding of the ups and downs that is going on behind the scenes. I myself owned/operated a large forum many many years ago .. I am one of the very few people who can appreciate all the work involved both in front and behind the camera. Member led revolutions for less restrictive rules, pile-on effect rule breaking and bullying, spamming, unpredictable influx of new members, changing availability of mods can turn quiet times into hectic times and vice versa! And while my forum was quite big .. it was rather small compared to the monster sized NP! It was because of that understanding that I requested just a simple title change on that one thread for now .. and that you'll get to the rest at some point in the future. Kinda got carried away in the discussion because @JB Lions rightfully wanted to explore the merits of my proposed changes and share his thoughts .. and I countered .. feel free to ignore all of that until you're ready to explore this idea further. At that point please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions on my ramblings and/or if you want me to write up the texts/instructions for each individual thread if you decide to go ahead with it! I'll even debate the merits of it with JB a little longer if you're undecided and you need us to come up with more pros/cons! lol ;)

That makes sense "on paper". I understand what you're trying to do, I'm an organizational freak myself, I have spreadsheets of what's in various boxes around the house. But does in work in reality, end results?

Before your new thread, we have auction wins in 1 thread, after we have auction wins in 2 threads. That made things worse, not better.

Then some further questions on your suggestions:

Is Drop-Caught/Snapped - is that for deleting names that somebody might use NJ, Snap, Dropcatch to get? Or does that also mean expiring names that you might use NJ or Snap to get? With deleting, what if it goes to auction, is that now an auction name? I think people would get confused on that one alone. I don't know which of these I'm supposed to pick for that situation:
    Report Domains You Drop-Caught/Snapped
Report Domains You Won at Auction or Closeout

Then auctions along with closeouts, different. One is Buy Now, one is auction. Then there is another thread, Report Existing Domains You Bought at Fixed Price, which seems would be the better place for those closeouts, since they're a Fixed Price/Buy Now situation.

There are a lot of people that get confused with the different situations, a lot of people where English isn't their main language and might struggle. Like I said, I understand what you're trying to do, but I picture those forums just being a mess with things being posted in the wrong place. Like you mentioned, we have less mods now. It will be more work to keep those sections organized.
