Wu Maoqing, a 32-year-old banker in Beijing, lost so much money in China’s stock markets last summer that he describes himself as “scarred” by the experience. But in October, he discovered a new asset class he hopes will help make the money back—short domain names. Since then, Wu has invested over 200,000 yuan ($30,769) to buy domains like gcmw.cn that he’s hoping to sell for twice what he paid.

Thanks to an e-commerce boom in China, thousands of investors like Wu are rushing to snap up “short” domain names, ones with five or less letters or numbers, and pushing up the value of domain names around the world in the process.

Any reason why not?

I am not saying that they will sell for double his purchase price but then again people were selling 4L CHIP Dot Coms for like $30 each 6 to 8 years ago (we bought many at that price). Some are now selling above $3k which means over a 100x gain in some cases. So who knows, a few years down, an estimate of 2x might look quite modest if he's picking up something that has relative rarity in a buzzing market place.

If your purchase cost was $30.00 8 years ago, today the actual cost is approx. $1000.00

How so? Inflation has been stubbornly weak over the period (less than 2% per year).

Even if you estimate 5% per annum compounded over 8 yrs, it doesn't amount to more than $25 so I'm curious about where you got that $1000 figure from.

Certainly not easy to get decent .cn anymore without paying a premium or fighting for them in the drops.

I have around 150 .cn, most picked up over the last year or so,one numeric in my signature currently on Namescon auction, hopefully will turn a dollar or two after all it cost me about $18 . B-)

Start with 3k+ as sell price (Some are now selling above $3k which means over a 100x gain in some cases).
escrow 98.00, cap gain tax fed (USA) 560.00, tax state (USA) 160.00, Reg. carry cost 102.00, inflation 25.00 = 945 +/-
taxes could be higher or lower depending on state and tax bracket.
