Lets say the domain zxc.com is going to be expire tomorrow and it has a very low Alexa rating. How do I register that domain before anyone else, and as it has a low Alexa rank it would be a good domain to get, but what do I do with it if the domain doesn't mean anything to me?

Should I ask someone like GoDaddy to try and get it for me? And if I use the back order option, will I get billed even if some else backed it before me?

If you use godaddy.com to backorder a domain, you get billed instantly. However, let's say you don't get xyz.com, and whoever owned it before re-register's it for 2 years. You have the option to then transfer your backorder credit to abc.com, and try to get that.

The point is however, that backorder credit is only good for back-ordering, you cannot use it to get an un-registered domain or anything, so in theory it becomes rather useless if you do not get the domain you wanted.

I hope this makes sense.

Here is a visual representation of the drop process.
There are specific services for certain registrars that you need to considder since you would have the most chance obtaining the domain with them. So it is important for you to find out which registrar is used for the registration of the domain in question.

Then you can check this list to see which service applies to "your" domain.
Which registrar is used?

In a nutshell..If it's a premuim to mid name..Sign up at Pool and SnapNames.com ...Because they will own it....Although some decent mid names can be snagged off drop...They are even getting thinner to grab.

On Snap Names, if I get a-asian.net, it will cost me $60?

If they secure it and you are the only person to backorder it then yes they charge a flat fee of $60. More often than not (on half decent names) more than one person will have backordered it. If this is the case then it will be auctioned between those people who have backordered the domain. If you win the auction then you pay the amount that the auction closed at. If you don't win the auction then you pay nothing.
