Can you transfer out domain during grace period

There are many registrars that charge exhorbitant fee if domains have expired and you forgot to renew.

Can you just transfer out those domains to another registrar?

Quite often I transferred out long before expiration only to find out there is this "thief" protection that has to be opened manually 5 days after initiating transfer. Then I do it again and again and again and this goes wrong that goes wrong.

Finally I got it right with a confirmation saying that unless I do anything transfer will happen on 20th. The domain expire on 19th. Cross my finger. Some already expired. Let's see if those domains got transfered out or not.

some registrars will let you, Godaddy I believe will let you transfer out during the first part of the grace period.

you can not INITIATE the transfer past the expiry date, but the transfer will go thru past expiry date as long as it was initiated before that

well may be after contacting support. What I experienced with expired names that the push or epp info interface would be not available once it expired

At GoDaddy you can transfer out up to day 42 after expiry. Each registrar is different. You should check your registrar's ToS.
