Buyers not changing Whois info

Is there any way to get a buyer to change the whois info on a domain they purchased? (I understand that it's a good idea to change the info in the domain being sold, but sometimes that doesn't happen. For instance GoDad used to lock the domain for 60 days if you changed the whois record.)

As it is, I've had one domain stay in my name for over two years, despite several e-mails to the new owner to change it. Luckily, it goes to a nice sight, but if it went to something bad, my name would be on it. As it is, I just get an offer for it every once in a while by buyers who use the whois for the e-mail address.

Would still like to get it changed. Advice?

Tell the owner that he/she has 30 days to change whois. After that time, you will file an invalid whois complaint to the registrar. This sounds harsh, but it's not as bad as it sounds, but it may get the owner moving.

I know for a fact that Go Daddy takes this seriously enough to get in touch with the domain owner. I recently bought a domain on Go Daddy's auction site, but the former owner had been using my new domain for his Whois email address, and someone had queried me about one of the owner's other domains.

I emailed my rep, and he said this was the only way to handle the situation. They're not interested in taking away the domain -- they just want the info to be correct. So the potential buyer got in touch with Go Daddy and filed a report (he said he didn't want to do it -- that it felt "mean," but it was the only way). Some of this guy's other domains are still using my new email address as whois, but what do you do? I suspect these are domains he's going to let expire.

Do you still have the owner's contact details? You will need that; otherwise, his mail/email/phone calls will come to you.

Good luck!

Had a similar situation w/ name not updated for almost two years. Sent periodic emails, but after no change filed invalid whois complaint. I think w/in 5 days it whois was updated.

If that domain is regged at GD, just use GD's whois, then click "Report Invalid Whois".

Seller is given the option to change the whois or to use the buyer's info already on file with GD when pushing a name. Use one of those options and your info will be replaced when the buyer accepts the push.

@ Weber - That doesn't always happen. Meaning their contact info doesn't get inherited.

Yep file a wrong whois report - won't do any harm they'll just force them to update it.

I don't know if I've ever had this happen, but i still have domains I sold years ago pointing to my nameservers.

I get several e-mails a year saying I have a domain that is up for renewal, and it turns out that the buyer never changed the whois. In at least one case I forgot I sold it and went into a panic when the name - a good one - was not appearing in my control panel. I don't know why a buyer would not rush to change that info.
