Bought 80gb External Hard Drive Today

I bought a Seagate 80gb external hard drive from WalMart today ($96).. the thing is great and just what I need to move files between computers, etc.

I can remember buying a 175MB hard drive years ago for beau coup $$ and thinking I'd NEVER fill that sucker up.. (who knew?)

Good Luck with the new HDD. What I did to make my internal harddrive portable was that I bought a USB2IDE cable. Now I can connect any internal device externally :D

Good idea.. and probably cheaper but I needed the space.. with all the ebooks, etc I download..

Congrats on your purchase, I personally do not like the external hard drives and prefer USB keys instead

Largest common is 4gb, but the 1gb seems to serve me well enough it takes only two trips with that to transfer my files, then again I do not have hundreds of free downloads and reasources to share with the NP community, so the 80gb should serve you fine and end up helping us all out

I make my backups on CDs, I'd love to use "thumb drives" but I'm waiting for the price to come down a bit and the storage size to increase.

Almost senseless to buy a larger internal upgrade IMO.. external fits the bill and is plug n play!

External drives are too expensive. A 300GB internal hard drive costs the same as a 100GB external drive. If you absolutely need it to be portable, just get a cheap external enclosure.

I have a 120GB external drive. It's useful for storing errr.......stuff on. It's about 20GB short of being full.

That cost about $175 in Aug 04.

I've never even looked at the USB ones. They're just too small in both storage size and physical size. I already have enough trouble remembering where my big one is...

Yeah, I backup on CD too but wanted to have fast easy access to folders etc and not have to bother with burning a CD for some stuff.. next up, an external DVD burner.

To think, not only does Walmart sell external HDD's, but they sell name brand too. That is quite a steal. 80GB is a nice size for an external too.

They also have a SeaGate 160GB USB one for $99.99

I have a 160gb external (firewire and usb 2.0) and it's very helpful since I have 5 puters in the house. We are networked but sometimes just moving the drive around for backups is easiest.
