External Hard Drive Question?

Hey,

well what it is, is that am looking to get an external hard drive that connects to my router. However iv been wondering, would that make it possible for me to access them files via the internet, and if so would it then be possible for me to run a game server off it (with my pc being off?) would it act like a server and even allow me to install for example windows 2003 server on it?

If so, anyone know any good cheap external hard drives that allow for this.

and thought that it said "web server, ftp" meaning like could run things am not sure though

That's a server..not an external hard drive as you asked about. You would need a server to run games but that's pretty much a computer vs just an external hard drive.

Also whatever server you buy if the intention is to run a game server...you have to make sure the binaries will run on the system. If you really want a server just build one yourself from a linux pc.

i see, its just it seemed quite cheap to be a server, do you recommend any cheap ones that could perform the tasks i require?

just to run a games server 24/7 lol and share some files with family

You can buy pretty much any PC to run linux. If you plan to run a server I recommend you get a cheap video card as it's not gonna be actually running client version of games. Get at least 1gb ram and you might want a big drive if you do file sharing. For the CPU you want something beefy like dual-cores...as best as you can afford. Basic stuff really.

be sure to call your isp and make sure you're allowed to run a server. they might have you upgrade to another account or pay extra. either way they will find out when they see all the uploading going on .

I use a Icy Dock Mobile rack in my computer.
It allows me to easily swap hard drives and run
a Linux server or Windows on my computer.
I recommend using Mandrake Linux for your server
as its easy to install.
