Most of you know about the fact that German car manufacturers Audi and Mercedes-Benz developed quite early their video sites on .tv domains to promote their brands and benefit from the fantastic opportunities offered by online video. We've discussed those two .tv sites quite a few times on this forum :
http://www.audi.tv
http://www.mercedes-benz.tv

But I don't think that anyone has yet mentioned that BMW has recently launched its very own .tv site too, BMW-WEB.TV :
http://www.bmw-web.tv

What's particularly interesting is that BMW already had a video site in the past and that its address was http://www.bmw.com/vodcast

Nice to see yet another big corporation moving from .com to .tv ! :tu:

We can see that .tv is really becoming the extension of choice for the whole world of online video, as it's widely used by many media companies but also by more and more big corporations and established businesses. :)

Nice find Michael.

Absoloutely right about another huge business choosing to use .TV as its online channel.
As we have all said many times, huge corporations like this can see the power of using .TV and are using is to run alongside their dot com sites.
They are not choosing .net,.org,info,.mobi etc etc , they are choosing .TV.
And in this particular case they even moved away from using dot com to .TV to better brand this site.

Excellent find!.

Great find Michael, such a positive sign that top brands worldwide continue to put time & money into .tv sites.

Brilliant news, brilliant site, 'pure dead brilliant' as a slang Glaswegian would say (not me as i'm a posh Glaswegian of course! :) )

:great:

BMW actually owns the extension bmw.tv, so if they were seriously moving to dot TV why would they bother to use this obscure URL, and not bmw.tv?

As things stand, bmw.tv resolves to bmw.de and is being used to promote the ccTLD.

it says "beta" on the site - so maybe they are testing here and will decide whether or not to run with it on bmw.tv?

Haven't you noticed that BMW-WEB.TV is still in beta ?

So they're using this URL while they're finishing its development and ironing out the possible little bugs. It's already excellent and quite impressive, but they really want it to be a top video site.

You can be sure that they'll be using BMW.TV for it as soon as it goes out of beta. In the meantime, they're redirecting BMW.TV to BMW.DE as this site is fully developed.

It doesn't make any sense to think that they use .tv to promote .de. :|

BTW, Mitsubishi owns and operates www.Mitsubishi-Motors.TV

Thanks ! That's an excellent find too ! :tu:

TV shows about cars have been very popular all over the world for years, so it's not surprising to see all those big car manufactuers using the power of online video and .tv to promote their brands online. :)

Rodash,

What is your point here?.

Nobody has said they are moving everything to .tv, if you care to actually take the time to read you will see they are running it alongside the dot com /.de

As as already been stated they are in Beta and you have no idea of what there plans are, what is however undeniable is that they have taken the time, effort and money to develop a .TV site to run side by side with their exsisting dot com & .de sites

The point of the thread to highlight another huge company who have decided to develop a .TV site.
Irrespective of whether you think its's an obscure URL the fact is, it is a .TV.

i dont think bmw-web.tv is launched my bmw
bmw.com and bmw.tv whois details differ from bmw-web.tv

besides that if bmw launches a websites it ll probably be under the main identity and that is "BMW"

my mistake:

This website is operated by the Bayerischen Motoren Werke Aktiengesellschaft (Petuelring 130, 80788 Munich). BMW AG is legally represented by its board of directors (Norbert Reithofer, Frank-Peter Arndt, Ernst Baumann, Herbert Diess, Klaus Draeger, Friedrich Eichiner, Michael Ganal, Stefan Krause). Commercial register: Munich District Court, Register Court, HRB 42243. VAT registration number: DE129273398.

Yes Makis... I wasn't 100% sure at first but I researched it too and it's definitely owned and developed by BMW to replace their old bmw.com/vodcast website.

Apparently they're using this temporary .tv domain while it's still in beta and will very probably be moving to BMW.TV as soon as everything is fully up and running. :)

Agreed. I've never cared much for hyphenated names. BMW should be able to afford a more respectable domain

I dont think there is much danger of BMW not being able to afford bmw.tv (i am told they already own it anyway), the real news here is that BMW gave up on a .com to move their multimedia site to a .tv domains which should be great news.
Another top company that gets massive media interest feels that its worth moving to .tv and pouring money into developing it with high class video content. :bingo:

When they iron out all the creases and the testing phase is done then we will see Bmw.Tv launch with fantastic media interest and another great advertisement for .tv's value to big business.

As Michael has explained,

BMW do own BMW.TV

They are currently using bmw-web.tv and this site is in Beta, once they have got the site up and running, then expect them to use BMW.TV for their main.tv site.

Really, how hard is this to comprehend?.

How hard is what to comprehend? You call that an explanation why they picked such a crappy domain to beta test?

( "Hey, I've got a great idea, let's get a really stupid domain to use while we beta test." )

MicroGuy,

I wasn't trying to be clever, but lets look at the facts here for a minute.

They already own BMW.TV
They have moved from a dot com to a .tv for this.

Regardless of what name they have now for Beta, they are commited to building and running a .TV for this project.

How can negatives come from a company like BMW choosing .TV?

Ok....you win.

Let's just put a positive spin on everything dot tv and never, ever, state anything closely resembling an objective opinion. We can all live in harmony in our cozy little dot-tv fantasy world. Geesh.
