I am fairly new to this. I am sort of confused how names like this are worth so much. I just read someone payed $500,000 for blue.com How do you make money with it? I went to it and its just a page with some ads.

I guess I was under the impression that some generic words were worth alot because they get type in traffic. Why would you type blue.com into the address bar? I personally have never searched for anything like that ever. Even Eggs.com I see sold for 112,000. who would buy eggs over the internet? I am confused about this stuff. Could someone maybe clarify it for me some. I would be thankfull

blue.com = ovt with extension of 1067 as per the last update of overture.

That shows that someone searched for "blue.com" at least 35 times a day for that entire month which = "targetted traffic".

Yep, Amex's blue was definitely the first thing I thought of.

An example of generics having power:

Go to http://www.water.com and see how many names that company operates under. It's sparkletts over here. While I'm sure they own the .com of each of their brands, by owning water.com, they really only have to advertise one domain, and what a powerful domain it is!! There are many other reasons why generics are so great, just do some searching for 'generic' and you'll see. Another advantage is the instant credibility owning something so generic brings. It's like you look at this company that owns Water.com and without knowing anything about domain names, you know they are serious. If you saw SparklettsWaterDelivery.us you definitely wouldn't get the same impression, nor would you probably remember it after seeing it on the side of one of their delivery trucks

Link: http://www.aeb.org (I'd rather brand / market / fundraise :$: for my Board as Eggs.com)! :lala:

Link: http://www.jetblue.com (I'd begin to re-brand as an efficient Blue.com / and market myself in light of the inefficiencies and troubles I caused folks in not preparing properly for the Holidays, etc.)! :red:

^ Priceless! PS. Link: www.Priceless.com (as branded by MasterCard© ). :music:

Just a couple of thoughts!

blue is more brandable than eggs but some of these names can actually be too brandable. ie blue is so brandable and previously branded that the use is probably quite limited.

If someone buys a domain for 500k I am sure they have another 500k to spend on branding it ;)
