Blog Getting Tons of Spam - Need Help

Just got my first blog up and running and now its getting spammed continuously through comments. I can keep marking each comments as Spam and deleting them, but this is really running up the bandwidth. The only option I know of to deal with this situation is to shut off the comment system. Do I have any other options? I'm hoping some of you blog operators might have some good suggestions. Thanks in advance.

What are you using for your blog? wordpress, or something else?

If you are using WordPress, look at this: http://codex.wordpress.org/Combating_Comment_Spam



If you are using some other blog engine, look up what CAPTCHA plugins/software is used for your engine.

CAPTCHA = that random string of text that you see in a picture that needs to be typed in before a post can be made, so to prevent bots (who can't do that).

Yes, I'm using WordPress. I will look at the link. Are there any Spam plugins for Wordpress that deal with spam?

What do you mean "deal with spam"? A captcha image/plugin does just that - it prevents bots from posting spam (and hence outright preventing spam). If you mean a plugin to delete all the spam you have, I'm afraid I can't help you. Just install the steps to set up a captcha and manually delete the old spam. It'd be a one time thing because you shouldn't get any spam in the future.

Not sure if it comes built-in by now, but do you have the Akismet plug-in installed? Also, there is a plug-in that will automatically disable comments for posts that are X days old. (Forgot the name of that plug-in, sorry.)

Akismet does a great job for Wordpress blogs.

Its a captcha widget - you just have to implement this into your blog and you're on your way to heaven SpamFree Comments

Although i must say Askimet does a good job dealing with spams, but it can't completely block those spams since it would be a risk - sometimes the Non-Spam comments might get caught into the Spam List which is why its alway a good thing to check before you mark a comment spam.

Try to use this CAPTCHA i'm sure it should help alot.

Zubair, is there anything else I need to do to install captcha after I extract upload and extract the files? thanks

I'm really not sure - i can't remember quite correctly

but i think you will have to insert some snippet on to your comment form - its been a long time since i used it

But i've found this page which refers to steps to install this into your blog system (i assume its Wordpress) so heres the link:

Akismet is great, but the level of spam on my blogs has tripled in the last few weeks - so I don't know what that's all about but it's insane.

YuP, i have been through that road.

This could be because you have posted url on Some bad neighbor-hoods?

Some-times its good to take precautions and not post urls everywhere :D

This could also be from other blogs because there are softwares out there that can grab blog URL's from other blog/websites - and they use those URL's to submit there SPAMs.
