Hi everyone.

Can anyone give me some examples of benefits to end-users of having a generic search term domain?

For example, a car spares dealer whose company website is their brand name/company name, what would be the benefit to them of owning for example, ''carspares.com''.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards and merry christmas,

Alex.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

Plenty of reasons:
  • traffic
  • SEO
  • credibility
  • authority
  • differentiation
  • memorable (great for advertising)
  • clearly defines the purpose

End users do not have to brand themselves around a generic domain (although some do), many generic domains are redirects.

Thanks for your reply sdsinc.

Would you suggest putting that in a mailshot to a potential end-user re the scenario I mentioned? (I own ''carspares.com'' and i'd be emailing a car spares dealer whose website it their company name/brand name).

I suppose what i'm asking is, is there a way to explain the benefits to the end-user of having my domain? In the past i've kept mailshots short and sweet with something along the lines of 'Hi there. I'm contacting some companies as one of the domains I own could be of interest. The domain is example.com. Please let me know if you're company would be interested.' ~ I haven't had much luck with this yet...

Would you mind breaking down the points you mentioned to me (i'm quite new to this).

Thanks again,

Alex.

One of the main issues is people would likely wonder what are "carspares"

Not so sure it's a good generic search term, having never hearing of a "car spares dealer" before. Maybe it's more a UK term?

In the UK it's a known term. If you need a new mirror for your car, you would look for car spares.

Hi that is a very good name. It is what people look for in the UK, but of course they are probably looking for a specific part and may prefer search results on .co.uk names.

I don't know how clued up potential buyers are about SEO nowadays, but imo after all the Google Exact Match Domain penalties and other changes, a domain like this only has two real advantages left from sdsinc's classic list:

Plenty of reasons:

  • ...
  • memorable (great for advertising)
  • clearly defines the purpose

And if you price it too high a potential buyer might do better to spend the money to set up the .spares or .spareparts TLD.

DavidG, sorry to confuse, I don't own carspares.com, I was referring to the example scenario in my opening post. And yes, in the UK it is a known term :)

Carob, please see above. :) I'm worried about the potential end-users not having enough info about why having the domain i'm trying to sell them would benefit them, ie, 'selling' it to them. Pricing is another worry, if they ask 'how much'?, I don't want to go too high and scare them off, but I don't want to undersell either.

Erm yes, Alien51, my name is Alex :-/

Thanks everyone for your replies :)

All this is covered in detail in the long thread about How To Find End Users.

Thanks Carob. I saw that thread after i'd posted this one. I'm on page 3 of it and have got some great advice from it already. Should be finished reading it by about this time next year, it's quite a long one isn't it.

Cheers,

Alex.

Arguably the most valuable thread on NamePros.

Two things come to mind immediately:

1) If it gets type in traffic, those are valuable leads to a company selling that product.
2) If they advertise on Google adwords for the keyword you can make an arguement that having the generic domain that equals the keyword will make them rank better in the organic searches and thus they can reduce their spend on adwords.
