Be careful with BuyDomains!

I got an e-mail from BuyDomains regarding a name I was interested in, it was a bit out of my price range so I sent and e-mail back saying I found another domain name they have for sale and asked to negotiate the price. The name had been listed at that price for at least 6 months, probably much longer.

I got no reply from my e-mail, but instead found the price of the name I wanted to negotiate on was raised more than ten times the original price.

I have no problem with that, they own the name and they can set the prices. But my advice, from this experience is to not try and negotiate via e-mail. Get your rep on the phone and close the deal with him or her.

The name I found was way undervalued in my opinion, and I guess they thought the same thing. So if you see a name you like that they are selling, lesson learned here, don't e-mail them about it. Call a rep and purchase it.

are you sure this is buydomains, not owned by their customers?

Arnie:

My name is Pete Lamson, I am responsible for BuyDomains.

While we do on occassion increase pricing, your experience is strange and sound as if there was some type of problem with this domain (unless, as was suggested in this thread, it is not a name that we own).

I am happy to help you, please call me on my direct dial at 781 839 2812. Alternatively, you can email me at [email protected].

All the best and many thanks for pointing this out,

Pete

It's been some time since I bought domains from them.....but I never had a problem. Everything went smooth.

I did notice that on some of the domains I turned down b/c of the price that in several months they emailed me with a discounted price to entice a sale. It might be worth waiting if you are not too worried about owning the domain.

Just one man's experience.

I had a similar experience. Last January they had a lot of there LLLL.com domains on TDNAM for some good prices...$200 - $450 range. I purchased 5 then later sent them an email saying I was interested in a few more. I asked them to email me a printout of all their 4 letter domains and prices. However, the printout came back with all their 4 letter domains in the $2000 and up range. Further, they raised all their prices on TDNAM as well. I do not believe they raised their domains due to my purchase. However, I think that their price increase has more to do with their owning and managing so many domains and perhaps they do not reappraise the values until interest is generated. Therefore, if your interested in a cheap domain, buy it, or haggle the rep down by phone. Letters of interest on particular domains may prove to be counterproductive when you finally discover that underpriced gem worth registering.

I don't like BuyDomains. I inquired about a domain a while back. They gave me a price, I tried to bargain a bit. They would only give 10% off. I said I'd think about it. Next day the domain went up 10% in price. I complained and they finally said I'd buy it at the original price - 10% as long as there were no fees to pay with paypal (it didn't say anywhere about there being a paypal fee, but I just wanted to make sure), they could send me a link to buy. The sales rep replies here's the purchase link, and of course when I go to pay, theres a 4% surcharge for using paypal. Lets just say I won't be buying from them again.

this company is the bottom feeder of the domain industry imho! they offer squat for domains and then have the gaul to jackup prices for the domains they list to unreal prices. Its a the atypical big dog thinking they can bully the little guy until they cave by nickel and diming domainers. A bunch of greedy pricks as Arn says!!

I have to totally agree. Most of their prices are ridiculous. A bloody waste of money and they would offer $15 for a domain worth x,xxx.

Yep, I had a domain that no one else could possibly be interested in, I mean it just can't be generating type ins. Every year I contact them and offer $150, which is a legit price for this domain. If they countered with 200, maybe 225, okay, I'd bite. But they wanted 700, just unrealistic, and the last time I checked with them, they had upped the price into the 2.5K-3K range. Now, they could have made a couple hundred off me, three years ago, but instead are still stuck with a domain they get no type in traffic from.

I dunno, guess they are rich and don't care. They own the domain, too, it's not one they are reselling for someone.

-shrugs-

s'okay, I guess, I have a hundred other projects to work on anyways.

What BuyDomains is doing is just a psychology ploy......offer you very little, like $100.....so then it becomes difficult to ask for $3,000, for example, so then maybe you settle on $600 instead of $1,800, or whatever. It works...it's a proven method.

An example: I bought a domain for $100 and then sold it for six figures. The guy only started off at $10,000 so I told him a million dollars ( a ridiculous sum for this domain). But guess what, by doing that I got him up closer to the price I wanted for the domain. If I had came back at $80,000 I would have never have gotten the six figures. By stating offending prices a lot of deals will fall through.....like 97% +, but you only need a couple of big ones to make it all worth it. You also don't spend time dilly-dallying around with punks and punk offers when you go high on the price. I've got better things to do.

Also, maybe I'm the minority here thinking this, but don't many of us buy domains for $9 and sell for thousands? Anyone can ask what they want for a domain and anyone can offer what they want for a domain. After all, isn't the idea to buy low and sell high? Yea, it might rub you wrong.....but hey it's business. Also, BuyDomains might be taking a loss to sell cheaper to domainers when the real money is in end users.....not us wholesale buyers.

Yeah, valid points, only I can guarantee you the domain I am speaking of will be undeveloped 10 years from now, maybe 20. I understand that they have no use for smaller sales, it's just frustrating that a domain I would be mildly interested in buying will never ever be sold, and never ever be developed.

I won't overpay for a vanity domain, and they have no other possible prospect, lol, and they can't possibly be making money from type in traffic.
