Hi,

Wondering if members could recommend an automated appraisal website that provides unlimited free valuations? I believe GoDaddy used to offer free appraisals, but no longer.

Uhm... I never said they give exact and correct appraisals. I meant they possibly use the same system estibot uses. Please do not make fun of a post when you did not understand it completely. I am simply trying to help the thread poster who asked a simple question and I'm giving the answer to it.

Be wary of Epik's appraisals though, if you choose to go down that path. While in majority of cases their appraisals match those of Estibot, at least in terms of suggested value, on some occasions they literally pump up the numbers roughly threefold. Learned that kind of a hard way myself recently

Valuate, on the other hand, provides same appraised values as Estibot, every single time, but their exact match and CPC info seem to differ from those of Estibot, which might suggest different methodology used (global vs. local US searches).

What I'm saying is that even if you do use these services, which is not bad per se, to be on the safe side do your homework and include Google adwords keyword tool check-up in your pre-purchase regimen.

I would suggest looking at past sales through namebio.com llllsales.com or similar sites, look at the domain appraisal sections in forums like namepros, or the sold domains sections. Get a good grasp on pricing for generics, shorts, brandables, business names etc. Then if you go a bit deeper, look at the niche your domain is in, research past sales in that niche, look at who acquired them, a company or a domainer. Is that domain that sold directed to another site now, is it developed or is it parked. Lots of ways to put a value on a domain name. I don't like auto bot appraisals as there is so much more to putting a value on a domain name. You should also look at all of the above when deciding if you are going to register a domain.

i liked your post, not because i like using them but because there are a lot of suckers out there who will think the name is valuable if a robot tells them it is.

Zillow does home appraisals and people understand its a starting point and not the exact number a home is worth.

On snapname and flippa auctions you see people mention the estibot appraisal often, it makes a big difference to many.

Estibot is such a powerful tool for increasing the value of some crappy domains :D That's why it is often mentioned.
If you know what you're doing, you consider any Estibot appraisals as junk and/or ignore them.
But not all the domain buyers are experienced domainers, and an Estibot appraisal could seem a legit tool for an accurate estimation of the domain value. It's like estimate real estate value by considering a fixed price-per-surface, ignoring the fact that a 300m2 house in the suburbs would be less valuable than a 50m2 loft in Manhattan. There are a lot of people like this.
And domain business is not different.

Exactly right.

I could create an algorithm to estimate home prices - square feet, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, distance to schools, shopping, etc and combing them with assessed values from the government and recent comparable sales from the same area to get an approximate value, and as long as the home is in good condition it would be a reasonable starting point.

With domain pricing there is no comparable method - each name is unique. Change the order of words, add or remove a letter, or do one of a hundred other things and the value can fluctuate by thousands of dollars. Estibot or other sites can try to perfect their algorithm, but for as long as these types of sites have been around, the estimates have been little better than throwing darts at random dollar figures written on a wall.
