Atom / Atom.com - Marketplace (formerly Squadhelp)

Hey Folks,

I've just started using squadhelp.com to list some of my brandable. So far I have 76 domains listed, there is no fee to list. I've had some decent action so far in the way of interested buyers but no sales as of yet. I've only been with them for 1 week now.

A bit of a summary review of SquadHelp:

PROS
  • No Listing fee
  • No Logo design fee
  • Ability to submit your names to end users holding naming contests
  • Ability to chat directly or send a message directly to end users.
  • Stats of your marketplace domains are shown in the marketplace dashboard.
  • Their customer service and support has been great, 24hr a day chat.
  • Ability to increase or decrease the list price of your domains or to show a discount. You can decrease or increase the price yourself by $200. If you want to lower more, you can contact support.
  • End users can shortlist your domains before they make a decision on which they want to purchase. The number of shortlists is shown in you marketplace dashboard.
  • When you submit your names you get to set the price you wish to get. Because their commissions are high I recommend listing at a higher price to offset the commission costs.
  • Their landing pages are fairly basic but they work. Because the marketplace is fairly new, I'm sure we will see style improvements in the future.
  • One thing I really like is they accept multiple extensions. I have listed .co and .io along with .com
  • Each seller gets a direct link to their marketplace portfolio, HERES MY PORTFOLIO. It is handy if your trying to p[promote your portfolio through social media.
  • I like that their marketplace doesn't have tens of thousands domain listings like BB. They are fairly strict on the domains they accept to list and so this helps keep the number of domains in the marketplace down and gets your listings more exposure.
CONS
  • Their commissions are very high, depending on the domain name they are usually between 30% and 35%. However, there are no listing fees, no logo design fees, so in the end their commission is very similar to brand buckets.
  • Their logos are not top quality, in fact I requested to have some of my logos remade.
  • I think they have a big backlog of logos to design, the wait time for logo design has been around 1 week, but your names are still listed while the logos are being designed.
  • After your names are accepted you need to agree to their commission rate, at this point you also need to apply your own keywords, descriptions etc. I found this was very time consuming.

@Atom.com How can the new Listings Page still fail at simple features like sorting by "Date Added" especially when that option appears in the menu? Is this going to be a permanent beta that forces us to keep switching back to the old interface just to do basic tasks?

Well said! I completely agree - there are a lot of bugs and theyโ€™re not being fixed. BTW @Future Sensors you can use the arrows in the new table in the column 'Added on' (those work for this field there).
Unfortunately there arenโ€™t such arrows for Views, so to see which domains have the fewest views I have to go through all X pages in the table, which is tedious when there are many domains. Not to mention you canโ€™t jump directly from page A to page X because the field with a number of page is non-editable (not everyone may know you can change the URL). Other thing is that 'Added on' dates are often incorrect - for example, they sometimes show that a domain was added a month earlier, which is impossible.

Could you share the approx avg wholesale price per domain? Thanks
When I take out the 3 biggest ($995,$999 and $499) the average is $52.

A good development. But nothing is mentioned about the situation where the buyer wants to transfer the domain directly to another registrar.

So does this mean in the future we could possibly see some seller advantages, like Atom paying the renewal fees on premium domains registered with them?

I don't like the word "All". I would prefer to transfer to where the buyer wants, why are you adding another step in the process ?
I agree. A lot of companies prefer to manage all their domains with one registrar. They may also want to use a registrar in their country. They should have the option to use the registrar of their choice.

They better offer something good. Strong competition going on right now with registrars fighting for our names. Namesilo recently made it so domainers get 20% of expired domain sales in site credits, I'm guessing that would be one of Atom's offerings.

I see this as a good thing for sellers because your transaction will complete as soon as you transfer the sold domain to Atom registrar, instead of waiting for buyer to initiate transfer, approve transfer, etc...

I agree this will probably get sellers paid quicker. (y)

The only time I wouldn't like it I suppose is that in my short time of using Atom I submitted a handful of domains for premium just to open the wholesale market to myself. I've already bought a handful from there so I'd just be mad if those have to go to Atom registrar instead of where I want them to go but I can probably live with a temporary layover.

The below message is still visible and the dashboard statistics still don't make any sense.

I wonder how long this message remains visible in the dashboard? Months? Years?

"Recent Update: We have recently implemented an aggressive bot filtering algorithm to improve data quality. Views and Discovery data may not be fully accurate for the next few days as the system adjusts to the new filtering rules."

Atom seems to have removed all the bots from the "direct lander visits" and seems to (have added bots to) inflate the numbers on their "platform discovery views". I remain very sceptical about these statistics and the purpose they are serving, namely to make Atom look better than they actually are.

Isn't this dependent on the expiration date before your domain goes to auction?

Does 1 site credit = $1 ?

Investing in 2 word .ai domains is a sure way to drain your bank account. The only winner is the marketplace collecting 30%. Do the Math. What is the average selling price of a 2 word .ai domain . What is the yearly renewal cost of a .ai domain ? what is the str of a 2 word .ai domain ? Compare this to .com.

You also have to stay on top of your renewal date. I have mine on auto renew but, it's hard to justify the cost of renewal.

One A.I renewal at Porkbun is around fourteen new .COM registrations. I haven't seen any Porkbun coupons for overall renewal or A.I renewal.

A.I forces you to choose the absolute best name you can register.
A.I sales average 4 digits and up.
It either inspires hopeful gullibility or overly optimistic confirmation bias.

I'm realistically optimistic.

If you purchase A.I coins and use your own prompts who owns the A.I logo?

You or Atom?
