Introducing the Commission Match Guarantee

Starting September 2, 2024, we’re launching the Commission Match Guarantee for premium domains. With this program, Atom will pay sellers 10% of the Atom BIN price (up to $300) if their domain ends up selling outside our platform on one of the Approved Selling Platforms. This initiative is designed to offset the additional commission costs you might incur elsewhere, giving you the freedom to list your domains on Atom while ensuring that you are able to list the domains across all major registrars.

Terms & Eligibility

In order to be eligible for the Commission Match Guarantee, you must meet the following criteria.
  • Sellers who have reached Silver, Gold, or Platinum status by maintaining 50+ premium listings are eligible.
  • Your account must be in good standing (with no unresolved violations within the previous 90 days).
  • You must opt-in to the Commission Match Guarantee through the Marketplace settings section on your dashboard and agree to the full terms. If you were previously using Atom's Reduced Commission Benefit, you will no longer be eligible for it, as only one benefit can be active at a time.
  • The benefits will be activated once you opt into the program and will apply to any sales made after September 2, 2024. If you opt in after this date, the benefits will become active 48 hours later and will cover any sales occurring 48 hours after your opt-in time.
  • Only BIN priced, outright sales are eligible. The BIN price on the Approved Selling Platform needs to be at least 10% higher than the price you’ve set on Atom.com for the last 30 days.
  • The sale must occur on an Approved Selling Platform in accordance with Terms outlined in our Partial Exclusivity Benefits. Please make sure you are logged in to review the Terms.

Is everyone opting in or staying with the lower commission rates? (we have to make a choice). No choice means you are staying with lower commissions. Here are the commssions after 2 years:
https://atom.com/t/announcement-reduced-commissions-for-sellers/11290
  • Selling Price Below $2499: 25% (Submission with Coins), 30% ( Free Submission/ without Coins)
  • $2500 to $5000: 25%
  • $5000 to $50K: 22.5%
  • $50K to $75K: 17.5%
I think I'm going to opt-in since most sales occur outside the brandable marketplaces (for me). Therefore I'm better off getting the $300 back for each sale. I suppose if/when I see Atom sales (6 mos and none yet) overtake AN and Sedo I'll swap back to opt-out. But just wanted to be sure I'm thinking about this properly.

If you don't have sales outside, it's better to stay with the lower commission. This year 2024 I have zero sales in Afternic.

Is there any reason that a seller wouldn’t want to opt in? Is there a downside to this program?
If you have Atom listings more than 2 years on the platform you are currently eligible for a benefit of a reduction in commission at Atom. However, their platform only allows for one benefit. If you opt into the commission match benefit, you will make money from Atom if someone buys your Atom Premium name at Afternic, but if your long-held names sell at Atom you will pay a higher commission.

Thanks! Which one is the better deal, or does it depend?

I believe that this flashy offering is not so much driven by Atom's own strength, but is mainly intended to keep current Atom Sellers on the platform during this strong growth phase, while these Sellers can simply switch over to Afternic landers (or any other marketplace) for their Atom Premium accepted domains.

I see this action by Atom more as a reassurance for Atom Sellers, especially since relatively few Atom sales are being published. The number of published Atom sales is improving, but it's mainly about domains from Atom's "Ultra Premium" section, and most ordinary Atom Sellers have not listed any domains there.

In this phase it may be wise for Atom to more actively promote domain sales that have taken place through the Atom platform, and share these sales with sites that report on a daily basis.

In the meantime, with the announcement of Afternic Boost, the commission at Afternic has gone up again for those who remain opted-in. Afternic Sellers are currently massively indicating that they will be opting out of the Boost program, since Afternic cannot make clear to them what VALUE they will get in return for the extra 5% commission. It all remains very vague, even when further questions are asked.
