Atom / Atom.com - Marketplace (formerly Squadhelp)

Hey Folks,

I've just started using squadhelp.com to list some of my brandable. So far I have 76 domains listed, there is no fee to list. I've had some decent action so far in the way of interested buyers but no sales as of yet. I've only been with them for 1 week now.

A bit of a summary review of SquadHelp:

PROS
  • No Listing fee
  • No Logo design fee
  • Ability to submit your names to end users holding naming contests
  • Ability to chat directly or send a message directly to end users.
  • Stats of your marketplace domains are shown in the marketplace dashboard.
  • Their customer service and support has been great, 24hr a day chat.
  • Ability to increase or decrease the list price of your domains or to show a discount. You can decrease or increase the price yourself by $200. If you want to lower more, you can contact support.
  • End users can shortlist your domains before they make a decision on which they want to purchase. The number of shortlists is shown in you marketplace dashboard.
  • When you submit your names you get to set the price you wish to get. Because their commissions are high I recommend listing at a higher price to offset the commission costs.
  • Their landing pages are fairly basic but they work. Because the marketplace is fairly new, I'm sure we will see style improvements in the future.
  • One thing I really like is they accept multiple extensions. I have listed .co and .io along with .com
  • Each seller gets a direct link to their marketplace portfolio, HERES MY PORTFOLIO. It is handy if your trying to p[promote your portfolio through social media.
  • I like that their marketplace doesn't have tens of thousands domain listings like BB. They are fairly strict on the domains they accept to list and so this helps keep the number of domains in the marketplace down and gets your listings more exposure.
CONS
  • Their commissions are very high, depending on the domain name they are usually between 30% and 35%. However, there are no listing fees, no logo design fees, so in the end their commission is very similar to brand buckets.
  • Their logos are not top quality, in fact I requested to have some of my logos remade.
  • I think they have a big backlog of logos to design, the wait time for logo design has been around 1 week, but your names are still listed while the logos are being designed.
  • After your names are accepted you need to agree to their commission rate, at this point you also need to apply your own keywords, descriptions etc. I found this was very time consuming.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.
GoDaddyGoDaddy
But you removed starts with, contains and end with options so you really can't know the intent of the user. You're making a lot of assumptions. But I think practically all end-users assume exact match searches will yield exact match results (all 1 or 2 of them).

How is displaying 1 or 2 exact-match alternate TLDs ever dominating a page?

I do agree removing the filter of "starts with" "ends with" makes discovery harder for buyers. And that ultimately hurts the platform for buyers. Atom previously said this feature was lightly used - so they removed it. But I think that was a mistake. There is no harm in those filters staying - even if lightly used. I think those field should be brought back @Atom.com

As to your second question they said "That said, we do surface some exact-match SLDs (across popular extensions) toward the top of results when relevant." I think what they meant is they don't want more than 1-2 TLDs or that would be considered "dominating"

However, I don't think all repair.tld are created equal. What if the guy who has repair.horse shows up and says - this should also appear at the top.
If Atom would limit domain extensions we'd avoid the doomsday .horse scenarios

One of the goals is to ensure that recent activity is clearly visible on the main page without having to click into each offer.

Exactly, especially as Minimum Offer is an account-wide setting, so basically all you see is a long row of identical $XXXX offers.:oops::oops:

Thanks.

It's worth noting that the overwhelming majority of buyers on our platform—over 85%—are specifically looking for .com domains.

If we take the information that atom.com receives an average of 2 million visitors per month as a basis, should we assume that the remaining 15% of non-com searchers, corresponding to 300,000 people, cannot easily reach the results they want?

When buyers are specifically seeking an alternative extension, they typically include the extension in the filter—and in those cases, the exact-match domain will surface right at the top.

As I have argued before; I still defend with the listing the exact match results should be exactly exact match. Nothing more, nothing less.

If a user is searching for "colors" with exact match option, then they need exactly the SLD "colors" and should only see "colors". If they want alternative options, they still have many options to continue searching without selecting exact match. Regardless of whether it is premium or not and the commission rate, giving the searcher the result they want right away will definitely increase sales rates. 7.5% commission is way much better than 0% commission. At this point, I do not think the end user will want to master more than 1500 TLDs and try dozens of TLDs one by one to see if they are listed on Atom.

Apart from these, when I select exact match and go to another page, the 'exact match' selection is canceled and it continues to display as 'all results'. Also, if I specify a filter and then select exact match, this time the filters are disabled.

Plus, the infinite scroll used in the search 2.0 design works problematically in Safari; since it overloads the CPU, loading is extremely slow and when I go to other pages, the page becomes unresponsive and unclickable. Considering that Safari has ~18% usage share worldwide, this means that approximately 1 in 5 atom.com users cannot navigate search results at all.

I believe that working with a good QA specialist will be beneficial to everyone in general.

I hear you. There is a fine line to be struck here though. Using an ultra premium like repair .ai make the conversation go "easier". I mean, after all - who would suggest (regardless of commission) that this name shouldn't appear at or near the top. However, I don't think all repair.tld are created equal. What if the guy who has repair.horse shows up and says - this should also appear at the top. Is the buyer seriously expecting to see this at t the top when they search "repair"? Isn't that a disservice to the buyer? It's not easy for Atom to pick and choose - except that's exactly what buyers and sellers want them to do. Should the first 40 results be all exact match words in any and every tld? Is that truly why a buyer comes to Atom? I'd say no. Again, if they want an exact match keyword they'll either (i) type it in the URL bar or (ii) type it into goDaddy or NameCheap, etc - and see all the avail EM TLDs and/or aftermarket prices.

Well said!
It's a very very difficult balance to reach. Personally, there are only about 10 different TLD's I'd want to see anywhere near the top, however it depends so much on the match across the dot. You can bet the owner of repair.blog thinks he has every reason to be near the top (though that TLD is nowhere near my top 10), and he would agree that repair.horse is dumb. On the other hand, the owner of stables.horse could rightly argue that his name is pretty decent. The more you think about it, the muddier the waters get.

Not an easy job at all for Atom to strike the right balance in providing useful results for the searcher.

Agreed, but we're referring to a very specific case that was posted here, with the owner of repair.ai complaining that his obviously premium domain using an extremely popular TLD, should be at or near the top of the EMD search list.

And he's right.

That's it, but people love to muddy the waters with strawmen like "but then the list will be full of .horse domains" when clearly no one is advocating that and no one ever did. You gotta love these bizarre Doomsday Theories being posted the minute someone comments that a premium 1-word .AI is being artificially pushed down in the search results. :xf.laugh:

The key here is to include POPULAR and RELEVANT domain TLDs in EMD searches, such at .AI or .CO, as well as .DE, .UK, FR, NL, etc. if the customer's country or region matches.

And don't worry Chicken LIttles, no .horses will be falling from the sky. 🐎🐎🐎

Either the owner upgraded to premium or Atom listened to common sense as searching for repair now has Repair.ai and Repair.xyz in the first 2 spots.

I know and I mentioned that yesterday, but so far no one has responded on either option.

With both of them up moving up the list to the top, I'd imagine Aton did some reworking of their AI search engine to upgrade a shortlist of popular TLDs.

They upgraded to premium listing

Was it the same with repair.XYZ?

Seems strange to have both of them immediately upgrade to Premium.

Before the owner of .ai made an upgrade, XYZ was already at the top of the search results when I last checked.

Hey @Atom.com , just a quick request: can we make sure that when someone clicks "Hear it" while "Domain Talk" is playing (or vice versa), the current audio stops before the new one starts? It would make the experience smoother.

Two month waiting !! Why domain appeals taking that long time and still pending ??
